Hi there, i am a 23 year old female and have been suffering from recurrent UTI's for over 5 years now however recently things have taken a turn for the worse and i've been hospitalised for pyelonephritis twice in the last 2 months.
I've had a cystoscopy and ultrasound done, both came back normal and during my first hospitalisation i was told by a doctor that it might just be "one of those things" and i'm just prone to getting UTI's. I'm also on prophylactic antibiotics (cefalexin and ciprofloxacin on a rotation of 3 months) but this doesn't seem to help much.
I find it hard to believe that after having to be hospitalised twice in the last 2 months that it can be just "one of those things" and i'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for any further tests that i could request when i next see my urologist at my follow up appointment?
It's disrupting my life so much and i'm at my wits end because nobody seems very forthcoming with any solutions.
Any suggestions at all are welcome!

Kerry I want to welcome you to the forums.

I don't know much about pyelonephritis so I'm not much help in that department. I had chronic infections from the age of 19 to 30. All they did for me was antobotics and a few times hospitlaized to recieve IV treatments.

Mine just kinda dissapeared though. I hope someone comes along and has more advice for you.

Thanks for the reply LLPLUV. Did they ever do any tests on you to find any reason for the recurring infections? Were the infections related in any way to polycystic kidney disease?
I'm currently still suffering from the infection that hospitalised me a couple of weeks ago, was discharged with a ten day course of ciprofloxacin which i have now finished and don''t seem to have worked :S waiting on urine test results before my GP will prescribe me any further antibiotics, getting really fed up with this :|
I've also been suffering from regular nosebleeds and cold hands since being discharged from hospital and don't know if this is in any way related to the kidney infection :S

Hi - I have a history from the age of about 8yrs old of UTI's I've also been hospitalised on numerous occaisions with pyelonephritis and hydronephrosis. No cause has ever been found, I've had Ultrasound, cystoscopies, x-rays with and without dyes, radiation renal scans, my urologist last week said I have had every scan/test available! I still have a swollen kidney, hydronephrosis (blockage of urine in the kidney) no blockage or cause can be found. Urologist has said it's just my kidney, like having one leg slightly longer than the other! one kidney is sluggish! my only problem is that now I have kidney pain, nausea, WBC, RBC and protein in urine but NO bacteria, so they won't even give me antibiotics, just painkillers. Good luck on getting a diagnosis, but sometimes there maybe just isn't a reason. If anyone has any idea's on my symptoms feel free to tell me!!!

Forgot to mention in my previous post I'm now 40yrs old so I've had problems for over 30yrs with no diagnosis, only that apparantly it's usually found in people with a type of diabetes.

Wow Yanoula saying you must be fed up is an understatement! My infection has cleared up but now i'm suffering from inflammation and only thing the doctors can do is prescribe me strong painkillers.
All i can do now is wait for my outpatient urologist appointment which initially was scheduled for November this year, ridiculously far away, but due to my recent trip to hospital will be brought forward apparently but still no word yet when it will be :S

Nov!!!! talk about leaving you hanging on! I've also found different doctors have different opinions. I've been seeing 2 docs and a Urologist, both doctors say that some bacteria can hide in body tissue and be extremely resistant to antibiotics. As they hide in body tissue they don't always show up in urine tests, Klebsiella apparantly is a particulary nasty one, this happens to be one that I 'acquired' in hospital about 20yrs ago. My urologist says 'rubbish' bacteria will always show in urine. There is also an illness called 'Chronic Pyelonephritis', this apparantly doesn't always show bacteria either! The only thing that is good is that even after all these years I still have normal kidney function, so even if you have regular kidney infections it doesn't necessarily mean your kidney function will suffer. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress!

Oh NO! Kerry, I am so sorry. Is there any way you can see a different urologist? November, that is a incrediblely long wait. I know they will have some cancelations before November...Are you on the cancelation list?

I hope this infection clears up for you!

Just home from another visit to hospital :( Infection has reared its ugly head again and they also discovered a small kidney stone in my right kidney most likely caused by all the infections.
Does anyone have any experience with kidney stones because i have no idea what to expect :S
Been sent home with antibiotics and meds to control the renal colic spasms and will be attending a kidney stone clinic hopefully within the next few weeks. Also been told i will be seeing the urologist in 6-8 weeks now instead of in November so at least thats one good thing.

Wow, i am so sorry. I guess the good thing is you get to see the urologist a lot sooner! I know several of the other members have had kidney stones. Maybe you can start another topic asking about Kidney stones and what to expect so everyone will read it
