I have been having problems I guess with acid reflux. At night when I sleep I wake up and have to throw up it comes up in my mouth and goes back down. The last few night I have been eating club crackers before I go to bed. I have to have some food in my stomach to take meds before bed it seams to help. Does anyone else have this problem or think they know what it is?
   Thanks all

I used to have the problem, but not quite as bad as you describe - more like I could feel it trying to come up mouth just enough to feel/taste it. It subsided when I had my gall bladder removed, and is just now (3 yrs later) occurring again.

It seems to be better if I take my meds/food at least 1/2 hr before laying down, and if I make sure the food is not too rich or too much of it. I usually have a piece of wheat/grain toast w/meds shortly before bed and that seems ok.

I think it's mostly because some meds, esp those we have to take w/food, don't really agree w/the stomach all that well...so the stomach uses gravity (laying down) as an aid to purge itself of the med. A lot of people take an antacid w/meds for that purpose. You don't want it happening too much, as the stomach juices can damage the throat.

Hi Tink,

I had a reflux problem even before meds. I took a rx med to help heal the esophagus and hubby used a couple 2x4 blocks to raise the head of our bed. THAT really has made a huge difference and I no longer require meds for it. But, like Lynnwood, I make sure all meds are swallowed at least 1/2 before lying down and I'll eat at least a small piece of bananca, or bread, or milk, or crackers.

Like Lynnwood said, make sure to address this as it can cause real damage to the esophagus.

Blessings!

Yes, I have had this same issue. My rheumy gave me Prilosec and it worked quite well for me. Please do everything you can to prevent the reflux. The acid will do a number on your teeth and can eat right through the enamel. I am in the middle of having a crown replaced from my recent bout with the reflux. Good luck to you!

Denise,

You've gotten some great advice. I would just like to add one tip. A lot of people sleep with a wedge pillow to help keep them elevated. I know how miserable this problem can be. Take care.

I did not have this problem until the last 2 weeks. Worse, I am supposed to be on one side or the other 98% of the day which means I am experiencing reflux with each drink/meal/med time. I have to drink tons of fluids too. Unfortunately I am unable to do anything about it- I already take prilosec and this is a known side effect of pregnancy. If you find something that works but does not require sitting up for a certain period of time please let me know because it is horrid.
