Hey there...

Have a question.
I go for my IVP on Thursday.  I called the doc's office today because I'm allergic to shrimp and everything I've read said the contrast is iodine based.

First, they decided that I needed to have "medrol" before I had the test.  When I went to the pharmacy to pick it up, the pharmacist said he talked to them and they decided to put me on 100 mg. of prednisone.  I reminded them that I'm already on prednisone and am trying to wean off of it.  He said I had to have it because of the iodine allergy and that they are trying to prevent me from having a reaction during the test.

So - anybody ever have that "super dose" of prednisone?  It is 50 mg tomorrow morning and 50 mg two hours before the test.

I also have to have the test at the hospital instead of the testing center...just in case I decide to stop breathing during the test.

I'm a little irritated...

Life just gets better and better doesn't it!

Ya, I was on 125mg of I.V. prednisone every day for a week when I had my medication allergy.  It's the only thing that will combat an anaphalaxic (sp?) reaction.  It could save your life.... Definitely take it.  You're only on it for about 24 hours right?  Maybe a bit longer?  That's a really short duration.  You can probably go back down to your normal dose right away.  That's not long enough of a time for it to make any difference to your tapering schedule. All this dose will do is prevent an allergic reaction from getting out of hand.  Sort of the same idea of taking antibiotics before a dental cleaning.  Preventative.

Ask your rheumy about the dose change when the test is over.  Don't take my word for it, okay!  Make sure she/he tells you what dose to take the next day.  I'm betting they say just take your normal dose.

I know it's irritating, but important!!

My bets are with Ginny -- it's a short, high preventative dose, and shouldn't affect your taper at all. They did similar when I had my gallbladder removed -- couple days high pred, surgery, & back to normal amount.

Hey Ginny...
Thanks for checkin in.

I'm OK - other than being pretty grouchy. Thought I would get a bonus because of taking the high dose of pred that it would make my headache go away - but no such luck. oh well.

Just anxious to get tomorrow over with. I'm tired of getting poked & prodded.

Again - thanks for checking in.

How are you doing today?
