The email said said...

SWEET POISON- A MUST READ PLEASE-

<snip, snip, stuff about Aspartame & Lupus & MS…>

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent. My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

<snip…>

Aspartame in the diet soda...and literally dying a slow and miserable death.

If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label; DO NOT EVEN THINK about opening IT!

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on "ASPARTAME," marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,' and ‘Spoonful.' It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're Informed now!

YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!

When you see things like this that you don't know if they're evil tricks or truth, you can check them out at www.snopes.com.

In this case, the email is FALSE, see the full description at www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp

I have also edited your post a little -- we aren't really supposed to copy long stuff onto here because of copyright laws and web space restrictions.

However, I must add that I have had bad reactions to aspartame -- it invariably gives me a headache and once gave me hives. I believe we had a discussion about it some time ago and several people said it didn't agree with them.

There is certainly no harm in trying a personal experiment and stop aspartame intake for a while and see how your body reacts!

I have a bad reaction to aspartame too, especially since I developed lupus. I feel sick and get a headache and upset stomach and feel flu-ish. I don't use anything with any artificial sweetners in it because of how I react. Like I said, I didn't react that way to these sweetners before I had lupus. I have no idea why this happened.

is it only in diet soda drinks? I dont use regular sugar, i use splenda, and the bad part is for people who will see that email, they will tell people who have lupus and are uninformed about it that it is the reason that they are sick, which can be very hurtful to us lupies when we really know that truth.

Most doctors who know about lupus and I mean KNOW will tell you to avoid artificial sweeteners because saddly they are reacted to by over active immune systems and can make many autoimmune diseases worse. They will tell you they do not cause the problem but that they do irritate the problem and result in increased problems. That is why all this stuff keeps going around blaming lupus and other autoimmune problems on artificial sweeteners.

I personally get very ill if I use any of them. I have problems with chlorine in the water and unfortunately part of the process of making splenda involves chlorination. I get extremely ill if we use bleach for anything. No one knows why.

ApplesK...

Its best to avoid ALL artificial sweeteners.  My mother has suffered serious CNS effects from Splenda.  We have filed an adverse reaction report with the FDC.  I have terrible problems with Aspartame and Saccharin.  Headaches, and a weird out-of-body feeling.

Artificial sweeteners are in so many things.... yogurt, snack cakes, cereals, breads, juices... these are just the tip of the iceberg.  Another really BAD substance is high fructose corn syrup and all of its relatives (found in regular soft drinks) The AMA has reported a link in its use and the spike in diabetes these past decades.

I dont know what the answer is, except to stay as close to the food God intended for us as possible.

Blessings,

Victoria

 I can't tolerate any type of artificial sweetners in anything. I get bad headaches and nausea. There are some that have no problems at all though.

does that mean we cant eat or drink anything? i have been using splenda for a while now and equal before that until my mom told me to switch, i dont think i have problems with artificial sweeteners and stuff like that, or maybe i do and i just wrote it off as something else. well i see my wonderful pcp in a week and my local nephrologist in two weeks so i think i will asked both of them about it. and just in case i will ask my transplant doc too, i see her next month (as i am typing this sounds sarcastic, but i swear i dont mean it to be). because no doc has ever warned me about it? hell they have never even asked me if i use artifical sweeteners. so maybe no using them anymore will do me some good. who ever found this bless you. take care all

Splenda is evil. Its bad for everyone not just people with lupus. Ever since I was young anything that said sucralose or aspartame will make me extremely ill.
