This is a link that describes in lay terms how sugar and fat can affect how we feel and how they can cause inflammation. It's nothing we don't all know, but it helps me to see this again and again, because I love KFC, ice cream, and all the bad stuff that can hurt my body.

You know PattyLatty, it's interesting that you bring this up. I was just thinking about this today. I know our diet affects us but I have to say when I had the worst flare of my life I had just lost 140 lbs and was eating really healthy and walking 4 miles a day. Which, I know there are other factors that contribute to flares. It was just horrendously disappointing! Thanx for the info. Judy

Hi Patty, thanks for the link. Don't ever think we know all this stuff because frankly I had no idea until rosie mentioned it in a response to me yesterday. She also said her daughter has asthma and it helps with that too. I have been hurting so bad and now I have some friends waiting by the phone because I think i'm head back to the hospital sad .
I think my COPD is exaserbating (sp). I never used regular sugar until the last two weeks because I couldn't afford the stuff I usually use. I usually use splenda which I know some people have problems with but I don't use as much because it's plenty sweet with half as much. I've been drinking decaf coffee about 5 or 6 cups a day with 2 tsp. of sugar.
I wonder if honey would be ok? I'll check the link.
It's good to see ya I sent you and email the other day didn't know if I had the right addy though.
love ya

On this topic...has anyone ever done a "detox" juice fast? I've been thinking about trying that.

((((OKie)))))) I so hope you feel better. Let us know if you go back to the hospital. God Bless your heart, Judy

I wouldn't do anything too severe -- like a juice fast straight from a regular diet -- it seems to me any extreme changes like that tend to set my lupus into action.

Moderation in all things!

Thanks Patti!! I look forward to checking out your link!

((((((( Okie ))))))))) I'm sorry you are taking a bad turn again. *sigh* I hope your docs can figure out how to treat you at home. Hugs, prayers and Blessings sis.

Carol, the splenda is poinson sis . . . think of making a batch of warm chewy brownies. Then the chef tells you . . . "um? just want to let you know that there is the tiniest bit of dog poo in the brownies . .. I used the stirring spoon to pick up a pile this morning and I rinsed it a bit first, but then used it to stir the brownies . . . but don't worry, I got most of the poo off" Would you eat those brownies?????

Those artificial sweetners, aside from being 'not natural' or 'chemically altered' . . . just GROW your sweet tooth. And for many people, your body responds to the sweet taste by releasing insulin. Insulin response will make your body STORE FAT! Its a really bad cycle. Then your brain goes into a funk because it thinks sugar is coming and no sugar arrives . . . so you REALLY want to eat because your brain is confused.

As the posters above say . . all things in moderation . . . but I'll take my brownies w/o the poo spoon.

Honey?? Raw honey is way different than the pasteurized honey we normally buy. Its not too hard to find, you just have to really check the labels. Dear daughter uses raw LOCAL honey to treat seasonal allergies. The bees visit the plants/pollen native to your area and eating that honey is like a natural allergy shot. She gets great relief in the spring and summer . . . but little relief from the fall allergies (likely because the fall is more of a mold allergy). The heat used to pasteurize the honey makes it much like eating refined sugar . . . but the raw honey is actually good for you (in moderation, of course).

Sorry this got SO long . . . just my humble opinion.

Blessings!

Even though I knew some of this, I really needed to hear about it again because I need that reminder of how bad that stuff is for you. I am so terribly overweight too that I have to do something about it now. Rosie, I loved your dog poo analogy. I know you used it in terms of artificial sweetner (that stuff is poison), but I might use that to help me with cutting way back on my sugar intake.

Great Hippie!!!

As we eliminate or use less sugar, natural foods taste sweeter. So after a while there is a huge bonus to stopping the sugar thing. An apple tastes way better after a few days w/o sugar and becomes a delightful treat.

Another inviting snack, we call it "A Party in My Refrigerator" . . . is a little baggy with a variety of vegie and fruit pieces. It might include a couple each of: small carrot stick, pea pods, apple slices, orange section, grapes, celery, red pepper, green pepper. You could include any you like. The whole point is to make up about ten of these little bags at a time and stash them in the fridge. They are so pretty and inviting that you find yourself grabbing one instead of junk.

OK . . . talked myself into this . . . I haven't made this in a few months. I need to stock them in my fridge again. I find that anything that is healthy and READY to eat is WAY more likely to work. A little baggie with cored, sliced apple with cinnamon on it is another yummy snack. The biggest benefit with these snacks is that I'm never driven to OD on them!! cool

Blessings!

Ok Miss Rosie pants!!! I took the challenge!! With the help of my dear mother and precious sister I have a refridgerator stocked with fresh fruit, cheese, yogurt, green tea (yuck), bottled water, tomato juice, grape juice, water, water and did I say water?? I'm really taking your advice. I'm trying to detox! Kind of a oxymoron. I take a hand full of pills every day and trying to detox!! :)

Seriously, I am asking you guys to pray for me. I'm so desperate to lose weight and just eat healthy and try to do the right thing!

I must confess, i'm a coke-a-holic and that will be my biggest challenge by far! I love it. It helps with nausea. And I frankly, primarily drink coke. Well, i'm trying to quit, so y'all say a prayer!!! (for me and those who must endure me without my "fix")

Thank you guys for being here. I really mean it. What a helpful, supportive friend hw is to us all! CHEERS, Judy

HURRAYYYYYYYYYY for Judy!!!! Way to go sis!!!

I'm so impressed and inspired by your huge action. Mine was very gradual and still not complete . . . but the party in your refrigerator is sure to be a big help!!!

If you were drinking more than one can/bottle of coke a day, you might want to taper a bit and then go off of it. The sudden absence of caffeine or sugar can give you a killer headache. It will only last about 3 days . . . but if you taper . . . it won't be so noticeable.

If you give up one 12 oz can of coke each day (and don't replace it with other calories) you will lose 15 pounds a year!!!!!! One average store bought cookie a day = 10 lbs./year . . . it adds up really fast.

Make sure you don't eliminate fat from your diet (you'll lose your hair and feel punk). Include some healthy fats with your meals and snacks.

Prayers coming up!! DO keep us posted on how this goes!!!

Blessings!

Okay, so i've made it through most of day one! I can tell you guys one thing I could irrigate the Saraha with the "fluid" i've 'lost' today! Whew! Me and Uncle John have been real close today!! I've had grapes, grape juice, water, tea, cheese, yogurt, almonds, pineapple, tomato juice (tiny bit extremely hi sodium) and water. Actually, I have been less hungry today than usual! I'm really psyched about this. I will keep you all posted on the progress! Gotta go! (literally) Judy

Way to go Judy!!! Watch those fruit juices though . . . 4 oz is like eating a whole piece of fruit and it goes down way to easy!!!

Blessings!
