Hi Everyone,
Have any of you tried water aerobics for your joints and to tone up? I'm thinking of joining our local community center which has an olympic size pool to try and get some exercise and tone up the flab some. I have no balance in water, but they have the belts that hold you up in the water.
I was just wondering if this has worked for any of you and what your experience was. Tks in advance and take care.

That is a great idea. I always feel better in the water. Unfortunately, I have severe allergies/asthma and I had to stop going into the pool (couldn't breathe in the high humidity). If you don't have any breathing issues, I am betting the water exercise will feel great! Good luck - I hope you feel better!
Take care,
Fran

Water aerobics is very good exercise for those with joint problems.  It was the only thing (actually it was not aerobics but just some simple exercises that got me vertical again) that allowed me to walk again but that is another subject.  Water provides a lot of resistance so you might no think you are getting much exercise but you are.  It is not as good for building bone strength because you are not bearing all of your weight.

Overall, it is a great alternative way of working out.

Babs, it's great. I only swim from late Spring till Fall, but want to start going to classes (for little old ladies, or so I was told at the gym) at our local fitness club. I hope I'll do it. I don't think there's anything better for us and our joints than water aerobics.

Tks Fran, Bill and Pat,
I'm going in a few days to give it a try before I decide to join. I took a tour last week and they have alot of indoor activities like a walking track, fitness room with alot of exercise machines, racket ball courts and the pool. I'm excited to see how it goes.
I will start out slow and work my way up. Thanks so much for your help. I will let you know how the test run goes...lol. You all take care and tks again.

My docs actually told me that water exercises would be a good way for me to exercise. I have problems with my hips, knees, and ankles, (thank you AVN) so as you can imagine walk is difficult let alone any kind of exercise on my feet. I want to try it but there is really no way i want anyone to see me in a bathing suit and I have a thing about public pools, lakes and oceans. I just feel that they are sooo dirty. The docs say that with the chlorine that they put in the pools its ok but I still kinda a thing about it. But I think its a great idea especially for any of us with joint problelms.

My rhumy suggested the pool too, but I joined wellfitness program instead, it's at the hosiptal my pcp told me about it. He thinks that would be a better place just incase something goes wrong. Good luck with swimming it sounds like it would be fun.

I finally made it to the community center today for the tryout... :-) . It was actually kind of scary at first with no balance in water due to my equallibrium being damaged. I did put on one of those belts that hold you up in water, but I kept leaning forward. I made it to the 4ft deep part so I could touch the bottom and had a ball!! I plan on joining the center next month so I can do it on a regular basis. I might be so sore tomorrow I can't move, but what the heck! scool   I got alot of leg and arm movement going today.

I did PT in a pool that was 98 degrees. It helped my aches and pains a lot while I was in it and made activity possible.

Hi Redrose,
The temp in this pool was 83 degrees. It was kinda chilly but I got use to it within a few minutes. I stayed in for 2 hours and felt fine during that time. I'm now starting to get some muscle and joint pain, but hopefully, it won't get too bad. I did PT about 8 years ago and the water there was much warmer. Tks for the help.

Hi ya Bab's That's great news that you are finding somthing that you like to do that is so healthy for you. I just hope you don't try to do to much to fast. Rome wasn't built in a day. I have to admit though if you are aching from the workout instead of the lupus that probably feels pretty satifying. I'm jealous.
