about a month ago my friend the naturopath convinced me to give up Diet Coke, sugar, and wheat products. That means no pasta, no bread, no ice cream, no Diet Coke!!!! I wondered how I'd keep from going crazy. But I did it cold turkey and within a week was feeling so much better. Now, a month later, I'm feeling like my old self again. I even went to the beauty salon and got my old haircut back. One nice side effect, other than the fact that I feel so much better, is that I've now lost 15 pounds. I still have a lot of strengh to regain and weight to lose, and I still pace myself, or as Rosie described it, hold some energy back, but I could live this way forever.

For so long I thought the quicksand I lived in was the way it was going to be forever and I was trying to accept that. But now I get out, go places with my husband, and spend more time with my granddaughters.

I've read that it's not uncommon for people with lupus and other autoimmune diseases to develop a gluten intolerance and I believe that's what happened to me.

I still have joint and muscle pain, but the unbearable, inexplicable fatigue has lifted. No one, but those of us who have experienced this kind of fatigue can possibly understand what it is, and I'm here to tell you that I can handle the pain better than I can endure the fatigue. For the first time in four years I'm back on a normal sleep cycle, have stopped taking lunesta and sleep all night.

After all these years, all these specialists, all these meds, and all this money, my friend the naturopath helps me figure out what I need to do to feel better. I feel that I owe her my life.

I'm glad I listened to her and I'm glad that I listened to my body. And I've even learned to love fresh veggies.

Hi,

So glad you are feeling better. I posted yesterday about becoming a vegetarian.. and I am also feeling a bit betty in the energy area after a month being "totally meat free". I think diet can play a role in how bad we feel.. as evidenced by us!

I can totally relate to what you said about pain too. I can deal with the aches and pains so much better than the lethargy. That feeling of "dead weight" and not being able to even lift an arm to reach something.. no one wants that. Thank goodness we have a bit of a break from that.

Strict diets are hard though, huh?

Ti

Thanks so much Babs.

Ti, I hardly eat any meat, and after having felt so bad for four years, this diet isn't hard at all. But I'm waiting for the day when I get tired of it. We have only one small health food store in my town but I have found a few things that I can eat to replace products with wheat, such as rice bread, rice pasta, and crackers made out of rice and some out of beans. I'm fortunate because I could live on lentil soup, split pea soup, and things like that, and when I make them I add lots of chopped up veggies. A stir fry isn't as tasty as a fettuccini alfredo but it feels sooooooo good to feel good that I don't mind at all.

You're right about the lethargy. I feel as though I've spent four years living in quicksand.

WAY GOOD Patty!!!!

Oh . .. I know the next day when I've been bad with the sugar and empty carbs. I feel achy and sluggish . . even without a flare. And I've always felt that artificial sweeteners were poison . . . so I won't lift them to my mouth, because even if I'm wrong, there is no good thing in them.

I'm so glad you posted about your success as I'm hoping it will inspire others to try the same challenge. It helps keep me on track too to see a positive post like yours.

Congrats on your weight loss too!! That will actually help your fatigue too. . . and YES! The fatigue was worse than the pain for me too.

Blessings!

Pat, congrats on the weight loss that is great!!!! I have been on a strict GF diet for almost 5 years now and my joint pain has only got worse. Of course I still eat sugar, I don't do diet anything but I'm sure I would feel a little better if I cut out the sugar. And there is no telling how I would feel now if I ate a normal diet. My problem is with my gut, if I eat too much fruit and veggies it tears me up with horrible cramps, etc. so I'll eat a little frozen yogurt, etc. My diet is not too terrible but I know there is room for improvement. Keep up the good work and let me know if you discover any fantastic gluten free recipes!!!! hugs

Yay Pat!!!! I'm so happy that you continue to feel so good. I was feeling a lot like you described before I got hit with my flu. For me, I think it was getting the hormones I was missing that restored my energy. I felt the same way about my pain - I could deal with the pain much better when I wasn't drowning in fatigue.

I think you have inspired a lot of us to eat healthier. Congrats on your weightloss too!!!

Lots of hugs

Hi Pat:

Congratulations on your weight loss. I'm so pleased to hear that you're feeling so much better. I know for awhile there you were really feeling rotten. I wish I could be so good at following a specific diet, but with my border line diabetes, and my gastroparesis it's really hard to stick to one specific diet.

I'm glad that all is going well for you and I'm so happy for you. You're in my thoughts and prayers always, take care my friend.

Love you,
Barb

Hi Patty, I know this is late in responding. I am so sorry. But yet I am thrilled that you are doing so much better! You deserve it. And a new hair cut and 15 lbs as a side effect! wow what more could ya ask for? I'm so proud and happy for ya. Now remember you still need to be careful that you don't over do it. I know I'm a spoil sport but I know when you feel good you want to make up for lost time.
It's so weird. You think you are doing somthing good for yourself by drinking diet coke and stuff just to find out it's killing ya. I still drink diet coke and I don't know how I'm gonna get passed it. Now that the weather is getting better I think I can drink ice water easier. Water has never be somthing I craved.
Anyway I just wanted to say hi and you actually lifted my spirits reading your post.
You go girl!
love ya

Carol,

How's Arizona? Are you feeling better now that you're there? Update me on what's going on with you when you can!
