Hi Linda,

I would guess that the infection would be more likely to cause trouble than the antibiotics. You definitely want to treat urinary tract infections fast.

You might want to be eating yogurt with active culture or probiotics so you don't end up with a yeast overgrowth after the abx though. We are really prone to yeast.

Blessings!

Linda,
I agree with Rosie. With a UTI the antibiotics will help alot more than hurt. I have never had any bad effects from antibiotics other than an occasional yeast infection. The yogart will help prevent that though.
I hope you feel better soon. Keep us udpated and take care. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Yup, I agree 100%.  Get on those antibiotics asap. There is nothing to worry about with them and your lupus.  Not treating the infection will cause your lupus to flare up.  I just finished a round of antibiotics for a bladder infection a couple weeks ago.  I feel SO much better in every way.

I also take a daily probiotic (acidophilus) to make sure the "yeast" stays at bay.  Rosie and Babs are dead on.  If you can eat lots of yogurt or get a probiotic from a health food store it's really beneficial.

Get well soon!

The only thing I have heard is that the antibiotics with sulfa in them can cause problems for some lupies and I know some of the ones used to treat UTI's have sulfa in them, but there are lots of other alternative antibiotics.

Last time I had a UTI it got bad in the middle of the weekend so I went to ER 6 am Sunday! They gave me a 5-day course of levaquin -- fortunately it was only 5 days as it seemed to give me some psychotic symptoms!

My charts now say I'm allergic to levaquin as well as the sulfa-based meds.

I also learned to read the fine print with that experiance -- the pharmacy did NOT mark "take with food" on the container & I took it on an empty stomach as I needed quick results (bad pain!) -- and I was sick with projectile vomiting in public....not something to repeat!

But other than those lovely medicine issues, it didn't make my lupus flare or change at all!

Hope it gets better soon --
