Doc put me on a new breathing med with an inhaled steroid. I think it's just enough to put me over the edge. I am eating like there is no tomorrow. My pants are gettting tight! I had a burger today and than I had ribs and tato salad and beans and now I'm crazy a chilli cheese dog! I got to get a handle on this. I hardly ever eat much but yesterday was just as bad as today. Any suggestions to curb this rage? It seems like all I am doing is thinking about food.

Hmm..I don't know how to curb the hunger (THough plaquanil did it for me-I cant eat when I am on that stuff) but you might want to feed it differently. Maybe more veges lots of fiber and protien perhaps less fat and calories so the clothes fit better despite the raging apitite. The other thing is (depending on your health of cource) is you might want to cut yourself a little slack and sort of expect a small weight gain from the steroids.

((((Carol)))),
Bless your heart! Some of these meds will make us pack on the pounds. I constantly drink on something all day and that seems to help keep my appetite down some.
Are the new meds helping you? You have been through alot lately. I hope things are turning around for you now.
Take care and update us when you can. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Oh Carol!  Quick, get a huge padlock, and chain and wrap it around the fridge.  Do the same with your pantry and cupboards!!!!!

I have been in your place girl...  When I was put on 60mg of pred when I was diagnosed, my hunger and urge to endulge in EVERYTHING was unbelievable.  My mom and I went to Arby's for dinner one night, and I consumed 4 beef and cheddars, curly fries and a dessert thing.... In one sitting.  We still laugh about it.  But it's not funny.  I gained 70 pounds in 6 months because I did not look after my cravings.  And that's all this is.  Big cravings.  You have to get your mind into other things when you feel yourself looking at the fridge door.  Find a distraction.  Anything but food.  I mean you still have to eat, but do it wisely.  Don't make my mistake.  I'm still trying to get rid of the last 20 or so pounds.  That was 8 years ago..... I have stretch marks that look like I was pregnant.

I agree with you that it's a rage thing.  When you're on those high doses, you feel out of control.  All you can think about is food.  It's horrible.  All I can suggest is drink water instead of eating something.  Or keep lots of fresh fruit handy.  If you get a craving, get outside for a walk.  Even a short one.  Just get out of the house!  That's what I do.  The water thing works well for me.

Oh, I sooooo know what you're going through.  I'm so sorry Carol.  You can do this.  Be strong and just say NO!!!  LOL.

Love ya!!
Ginny

((((((((((( Carol ))))))))))

OH NO!! I'm not on steroids yet (soon) and I SO feel for you Carol!!!

I've been working on my weight for about a year and a half . . . and have slowly lost some.

I keep telling myself: "You don't have to have a party in your mouth all the time!!!"

I quit buying ANY unhealthy food . . . so if it isn't in the house, its easier to eat healthy.

I keep some vegies and fruits ready to eat (this really does help . . . . if they are washed, peeled, cut and in little baggies, I'll grab one . . . if I have to bother with cutting and peeling, they will rot in the fridge).

Your body has been through a LOT lately and I think your little party was well deserved. Just be kind to yourself so you don't have weight gain to make your breathing even harder. *sighhhhhhhh* its so hard sometimes, isn't it???

I'll likely start Entocort (a steroid) soon . . . I'll be writing to you to ask for help when the munchies hit!!

Blessings!

Hi Carol, I chew gum and drink alot--but that has problems too. I found that weight control quaker instant oatmeal fills me up and suppresses my appetite pretty well in the morning, even one packet. Must have added fiber. I also tried some of the south beach protein between meal drinks. They have the vitamins and antioxidants and also fill you up because of the protein. I like that kelloggs K water the best, but it's really expensive so I tried the south beach. It comes in the little packets you pour into a bottle of water. I got low carb ice cream and frozen yogurt, drink milk instead of water if you can to fill you up and get calcium, eat lots of meat and veggies and occasional fruit. The meat really fills me up. Celery is supposed to to. Some people say fiber helps and that clear stuff like benefiber you can mix in drinks and food and is tasteless. I haven't noticed it helping a whole lot. That oatmeal really works! At least for a while.
Hopefully you will feel better and be able to be more active and burn off the extra weight. Maybe some of it is water too. I'm on a low sodium diet now for that--on top of no sugar and carbs. Isn't life grand?

Take care and hope you feel better. Fortunately, I've been so nauseaus I can't eat much.
Love, Marji

My doctor told me to drink water with lemon (or lime) juice in it, and it's kind of like a natural appetite suppressant. It may not be enough to curb the raging steroid kind of appetite, but maybe worth a try. It also seems to help settle my stomach when it's feeling queasy.

Small healthy snacks throughout the day might also help keep you on an even keel and may calm some of the cravings. I lost a bunch of weight by doing that and was eating all the time (about every 2 hrs) — I wasn't on steroids, though.

It's not easy even without being on steroids, and I haven't been on them yet (thankfully!) so can only imagine what it does to you. Yikes! I sure don't look forward to ever having to be on them.

Hi sj,Bab's,Ginny,Rosie,Marji,Debbie, and Bee. Thanks for all your responses and help.
SJ, yesterday I gave serious thought to eating a salad, unfortunately my mind said that's not gonna get it I need CARBS!!!!!!!!. lol. I'm more of an atkins kind of person so this sudden carb thing is really hard on the tummy.
Hi Bab's, I think the breathing treatments are helping some thanks for asking. Yes I do seem to have somthing to drink at all times. either coffee or coke. I know I should drink water but for some reason it just doesn't appeal to me. Than again looking like a balloon doesn't appeal to me either. How have you been doing? I am so far behind here.
Rosie, i'm taking pulmacort which is an inhaled steroid I don't know if they are in the same family or not. I take 4 different inhaled steroids plus the 10mg. of pred every day. I do try not to have junk food around but when I get a craving and am at the store I have been stacking up on stuff! I havn't eating yet today and I am noticing that a lot of what I am doing is getting it in my head long before I want it in my stomach. So maybe if I can change the way my thinking goes. It's just not worth it to get heavier with the lung problems I have to stay as close to normal as possible.
Marji, I love instant quacker oatmeal but I didn't know they mae weight control. I bought cinnamin flavors and ate 2 packets at a time. LOL. So not good. I can't chew gum because it sticks to my plate. How's that baby doing?
Thanks Deb, yeah I hope you don't either. We'll just keep a possitive thought in our head about that one. thanks hun for responding.
Hi Bee, thanks for the input. My mom actually used to go to ellain powers sstudio's nd lost a ton of weight and they told her to drink the lemon water too. I'll have to give it a try. thanks for your help.
Hey Ginny, I know it's not funny but I did have to laugh about your arby experience. I can totally relate. In the first place I love arby's roast beef with their arby sauce and horsey sauce! I could see myself eating that much too. I'm so proud of you for getting that weight off. You should give yourself lots of pats on the back for that one. I have 2 doctor appts this week and am going to discuss it with them. Maybe they can give me yet another pill to curb the appt.I don't want anything that will make me shake though. I'm already runing amuck in my head from the steroids now.
love ya

thanks everyone
love ya

Oh Carol! I know exactly how you feel!! I just had to increase back up to 40 on the prednisone and i'm starving night and day! I wrote a little "psalm" about it...

Oh thou steroideth how I loveth and doeth altogether hateth thee.
Thou makest me to graze as doeth the cow in green pasture. Thou
leadest me to drink much waters and retaineth them as doth the camel.
Thou makest me to have the personality of a rattle snake, yet fear not, for this
too shall quickly pass! Behold! Suddenly I shall burst forth with tears as the weeping
willow; or howl with laughter as the hyena. Thou restoreth the energy of my youth even
as thou robbest me of my strength and cause my bones to become brittle. Oh thou, steroid,
how I love and doeth altogether hate thee! :) Might as well laugh! Bon appetite! Judy

I have found that the Anti Inflammation Zone diet works wonders.....it is a LOT of good, nutritious, healthy food....lots of it.....I look at it sometimes and ask how the heck I am going to be able to eat that much....but boy is it good. I'm not on any meds at this point, except for thyroid....so, don't have that medication induced appetite....but, get this book, and check it out....I'll be willing to be that it may help!!! Lots of water too.....
good luck.

Carol,
I'm glad your feeling a bit better. I'm not a water drinker either, I'm a coke-a-holic! I do try to get some milk down sometimes and tea. I do drink water at work. I'm doing pretty good, tks for asking. I hope you find a way to decrease your appetite...((hugs)). Take care and keep us updated. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

((((( Carol ))))) I'm not on steroids but do have a heck of a sweet tooth yeah and love coca-cola too. I decided to cut back on my sugar intake and also wanted to drop a few pounds so when I am work I drink water and try to eat fruit and nuts instead of chocolate, soda and skittles (my fav tongue ).

I would eat a lot more fruit and veggies if my gut would let me but if that doesn't give you any trouble cut up some fruits and veggies and snack on those. Also fat free pudding is really good and satisfies the craving. I'm like Rosie if I don't buy it I don't eat it. Hang in there sis!!!! Let us know what the doctor says.

Judy, LOL, that was a riot. Carol, the weight control is different from the regular. I can eat two or three of the regular ones no problem. Weight control has less sugar, is twice the size, and has more fiber and less carbs and is surprisingly filling. I don't know what's in it, Sawdust maybe, but if it works....

I know what you mean by carb cravings. Your blood sugar is probably screwy. Fruit might help satisfy that, also high quality sugar free popsicles. You might have a need for some carbs, doing the atkins, like I sometimes really need them once in a while. A baked potato is a good snack and I guess potatoes have some vitamin in them that women need so I took to eating a couple a month.

My problem on steroids is Little Debbie. She is so sweet and good. Ummm!
Love, Marji

Dear Carol the Fat Toad-

Hahahaha!  Oh have I been in your shoes from steroids!  They make you idolize the Food Network Chefs even to the point of wanting to have them over to your house!  You want foods that you hated in the past because now they look good!  It doesn't matter who you have to trample over to get to your craving.

My advice;  don't gain 80lbs. like I did!  Tell your doctor about what is going on and if you have any choices.  Steroids work great but have nasty side effects!

You have had the funniest email yet and I think we could be friends!  Afterall if you can't laugh at this stuff what is the point!!!

Keep writing!

I really liked the comment where the person's advice would be to make up some Ziploc bags the night before because you WILL EAT and won't be stopped on that stuff! That was a really good suggestion to have fruits and veggies there. Also, salt will make you retain water with these meds. Popcorn with little or no salt would be good too.

Most of us had no choice but to be on steroids and maybe you don't either. They do work miracles when we need them. Be advised of possible mood changes too! Don't stop taking them before talking with your doctor!

If you find something that works....TELL ME!!!

GOOD LUCK!

LOL, you guys are great you really lifted my spirits!

Judy I almost rolled out of my chair when I read your psalm! Yeah there is a lot of salt in soda. I do get adema and am on lasixs. Hasn't stopped meyet though. skull Another symptom of this disease it is clear....when I look down my feet disappear!

Sunshine, thanks for the tip. Just the name of that book has me intriqued. I'll check it out!

Hey Debbie, ouch! I have actually been called obese before. well actually I saw it on my chart which was just as bad. I'm 5'2 and used to weigh 213lbs. I'm down to 160 but I know I am capable of packing them back on in no time. Especially because not only do ya crave the carbs but once they are on they don't want to go away. sad Let us know what your pcp says though.

Bab's I'm a coke a holic too. can't live without it. Thanks for the prayers I know I can always count on you! ((((((bab's))))).

Stacie, lol I hate skittles, but I love pudding. and I could try the fat free. They usually are pretty good. I thought about trying that keifer stuff but I'm not sure if that would help or not. I can eat some fruit but the veggies I have trouble with. I love raw vegies but I wear dentures and I need to get them refitted because my gums have shrunk and it hurts to eat hard food. Unfortunately my bank account says not this month and my insurance won't cover getting them adjusted. I'm probably the only person in te world that takes their teeth OUT to eat! lOL.

Hey Marji, When I first read your post I tried to invision a little debbie on steroids LOL I guess I read that wrong. LOL. Heck i'm up for sawdust if it works. Might be a little rough on the collon though. I've been craving a baked potato real bad but I don't have them around the house. Besides if I did I'd want butter sour cream bacon bits broccoli cheese ect ect ect. LOL. I know I'm gonna dream of food tonight.

Hey Gretchen , nice to meet ya. I've been away awhile. Things have been a little rough but for today I feel pretty good. Unfortunately the side effect is the screamin munchies.! I could invision you plowing people down to get to the fridge! LMBO. LOL that was too funny. but oh so true.

Well thanks again everyone. I'll sleep good tonight knowing your all out there on my side. I have a rheumy appt tomorrow. It's not until 300 oclock though. Hopfully he has some suggestion about what I can do. My lungs are so bad every extra pound makes it hard on my heart. So I really have to get a handle on this. Part of it might be partialy the moving and stuff has me nervous. but that doesn't explain the crab crave. No sandwhich is safe around me.

Well bedtime

love a guys

caro
