I'm new to this site, so i'd like to firstly say hello to everyone out there..i really hope this site is going to provide me with some much needed suport..i feel i should let things out of my system.I shall offer any help i can to others.
Well let me start, i have had SLE for around 18yrs..i'm in my early thirties and i am hoping to settle down to the next stage of life, marriage..When i was initially diagnoised i had kidney damage, around 50 percent both sides, pretty severe..I've been on alot of medication..mainly azathioprine and BP tablets.Thankfully things are stable
basically i'd like to know has anyone had problems with regards to pregnancy.i'm also concerned about long term use of Azathioprine..I've been on the same dose of this tablet 75mg and am very worried about the side doctor advises me to stay on this dose incase there is a return flare up.
i guess i'm abit scared of going forward, it seems risky.what do you all think?

Hi Adkv !!!

Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry you've had such a long hard road with Lupus. I think your med is Imuran. I'm sorry I don't know a thing about it . . . but I'm sure some of the others will be along with their personal experience.

This is a great place to vent and share. I hope you make some good friends here.

Hi there, and welcome!
I'm sorry you are dealing with kidney issues and lupus.  YOu've had it a long time haven't you. Good to hear it's all stable right now!
well, this is a topic that I have to have with my doctors on a yearly basis it seems.  I'm also on Azathioprine.  100mg daily.  I have been for over 6 years now.  I'm getting varying advice from doctors on this drug and pregnancy.  Some say it's okay, but I have to really watch myself, and others say I'd have to come off it..... Thanks guys.  That really helps.. NOT.
I don't have kidney issues with my SLE.  Never have.  However, with my APS (blood clotting disorder), pregnancy is not recommended.  I have APS pretty severely.  The likelyhood of me even being able to conceive is small.  Carrying to term is unlikely.
Lupus presents so many challenges for us when we're not pregnant.  The challenges compound greatly when we are pregnant.  My gynocologist is a high risk specialist with many lupus patients.  She recommends a full and true remission (off all medication)of SLE for at least 9 months before even starting to try to conceive. Pregnancy is risky even for healthy, non-lupus women!
I would love to be a mom, but I know I never will be.  Unless God has other plans!  Adoption is out for me too.  I can't look after myself some days, so how can I look after a baby, child, teenager, etc?  For me, I don't think it's in a child's best interest to have me as a mom.  Wow.  That made me really sad typing that sentence out just now....  Anyway...  It's a personal decision that you have to think about very seriously and with a lot of knowledge and advice from your doctors. Just remember how hard it can be to take care of just you.  Add a pregnancy, baby, to the mix... Can you do it?  You have to ask those hard questions and be totally, 100% truthful about it.
I know you'll get a lot of responses about your questions.  A lot of varying opinions, and good information.  Glad to have you here!

Hi and welcome. I'm so sorry you have been through so much and that you have had kidney problems. I can't offer a lot about pregnancy because I had both of my kids before I had lupus, although I think it was starting to rear it's ugly head around the time I got pregnant with my youngest. I had a miscarriage right before getting pregnant with her and I also had a pretty complicated pregnancy with her and then got really bad symptoms a year or two later.

There are people here who have been able to have children and then others like Ginny who won't be able to. My heart goes out to those who want to have children but won't be able to. My mom has a neighbor who had a pretty sever lupus symptoms but with the close supervision of several doctors whe was able to have children, but every case is different.

I wish I could help more with your questions, but I can tell you that you have come to a great place for support. We are here for each other through all the ups and downs of this disease.

I'm glad you joined us and I look forward to hearing more from you.
