My lab results from the rheumy show my B12 is a little low (392) rheumy wants me to change from regular folic acid tabs to Folgard OS. Anyone else with this problem?

I pray everyone is doing well. :-)

Hi Stacie,

My mom always had low B12 and until she had a hysterectomy, she'd get a monthly B12 shot. Now she takes B12 tabs e/o/d. I hope the extra folic acid helps. Have you been well otherwise?? Probably draggy tired.

Blessings!

One thing you may want your Dr. to check is whether or not your body is still absorbing the B12. They will need to do a UA to figure that out. My body quite absorbing B12 so now I have to get shots every 3 weeks. I got very sick and weak before my Lupus Dr. test me and figured it out my PC Dr. had no clue.

Fibro since 97, Lupus since 99, neuropathy and other nerve damage.
On to many Meds to list, Finally got a date for SSA of July 1 after to many years of fighting for a hearing.

Thank you both, I will ask my rheumy about the UA, I hope the pills work for me.

Rosie, I've been very tired and had some GI problems but other than that I'm ok.

Stacie,
I'm sorry you have been having so many problems lately...((Hugs)). Did the doctor start you on B-12 injections? They really help boost my energy. I just started giving them to myself. I do one once a week for 4 wks then once a month. I hope you start to feel better soon sis! Please take care and rest all you can. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Carol & Babs, I heard back from the rheumy's office, she said my B12 was low because of decreased absorption and also from the lupus meds I am on. In addition to the 3 mg of folic acid I take daily, she wants to add Folgard OS which I believe also has other vitamins and minerals including B12 & calcium. I hope it works well and I can shake some of the symptoms and get out of this flare.

Carol, I've been missing you, update us on how you are doing when you are up to it. hugs and love to you!

Babs, I don't think my b12 was low enough for injections. It was still in the normal range at 392 (range is 211 - 911) but it was low enough to be causing some problems. I was very surprised to learn about B12, what it does and what can happen if it's low. Here are some symptoms & a link.

Vitamin B12 and Folate Deficiency

labtestsonline.org/understanding/conditions/vitaminb12-2.html

Confusion
Paranoia
Diarrhea
Dizziness
Fatigue, weakness
Loss of appetite
Malabsorption
Paleness
Rapid heart rate
Shortness of breath
Sore tongue and mouth
Tingling, numbness, and/or burning in the feet, hands, arms, and legs (with B12)

The last symptom I think it what prompted my rheumy to check my B12, I think it's a good idea for all of us to ask our doctors to check these important vitamin levels which could be causing some of our problems. Take care all and have a great weekend! Hugs to all
