I had a hysterectomy almost 3 years ago, removed my uterous and my cervix, left my ovaries. I am 39 years old and recently started full blown menopause. Tuesday I had a colposcopy as I had 3 pap's come back abnormal, along with 4 spots being found where my cervix was. My GYN. is blaming Lupus on my Ovaries failing and putting me into early menopause. I saw my Rheumie yesterday for my 6 month appointment and he said that it isn't the Lupus making my Ovaries fail, it would have happened no matter what.

Who do I believe? My GYN? My Rheumie? I have no clue, and I am confused. Either way I am in early menopause and will be starting hormones in 2 weeks to control it.

Uggh I hate when doctors can't agree on something and make me more confused then I was to begin with.

Hi Connie,

I understand the frustration you have. It's a well known fact that lupus can be the cause of ovarian failure. Definitely.  For your rheumy to say otherwise is very strange. Lupus can attack any organ.  I've had discussions about this with my gyno too and she has lots of lupus patients who have early ovarian failure. In any case, it could be lupus or not.  There's really no way to know.  I wonder if a biopsy would be able to tell?  Like doing a biopsy on the kidneys or liver, why not the ovaries?

I"m sorry about this Connie.  Just one more thing to deal with, right?  Let us know how the hormones are working for you.

I thought that my GYN would know what he was talking about. I am not sure why my Rheumie would tell me that. I will mention it to my GYN in two weeks when I go back.

Thanx Ginny, I'll let you know how the hormones are going in a couple of weeks when I start them. As long as it helps with the hotflashes and night sweats it will be good.

I haven't started them yet, I see the GYN again on the 22nd and he is going to start me on them then. I will let you know then what I will be taking. I can't wait for the night sweats and power surges to slow down, that would be a bonus, even if they don't go away completly, just a huge break would be to not have as many and for them to not be so intense when they do come. I always feel sick to my stomach first and then my face gets hot and then watch out, the sweat drips off of me.

I agree, we all need a break and if hormones will give me that break then I am all for them, regardless of what you hear about them, for 6 or 7 years, I am willing to risk it.

My GYN told me that women who have had a hysterectomy(with ovaries left in) will go through menopause much sooner than what would be normal.

That makes sence to me, to be in early menopause, but according to my GYN it isn't because of the hysterectomy that I am in menopause. Weird how these doctors can have different outlooks for the same thing they specialized in.

Hi Connie:

I believe that our hormones are connected to our disease. I've also heard that taking hormone replacement therapy can possibly make your lupus worse. I had a hysterectomy in 1997, and I have to say I felt a lot worse, considering that I had just had my tonsils removed.

I've had several surgeries in my abdomen, and each time the surgeons commented on how much inflammation is in my belly. I had so much inflammation that my colon was folded onto itself. So I do believe that lupus has caused your ovarian failure. I wanted to say welcome to HW and good luck on figuring this one out. Hopefully others will put in their two cents worth. Wishing to you the best and take care and sleep well tonight. Hope you start to feel better (((hugs)))

Take care,
Barbara

HI Barbara Lee.

And thanks for the welcome. I have posted here a few times before, but am mostly a lurker, (slapping my hands, I promise I will come out of lurkdom now). :-)

I am worried about the hormones as well, but at this point the hot flashes are so miserable that I am willing to try them. I get a sick feeling in my stomach before each hot flash, then my face starts to burn and then the sweats come and I can't do a darn thing about it. And the night sweats are almost worse, I wake up dripping and the sheets and pillows are wet as well. I am driving my hubby crazy, although he knows it's not my fault.

I have RSD as well in my leg and any surgery I have had since that has been touchy as well as it can make the RSD worse. So I think I am fighting an unwinable battle with both of my diseases. So I guess all I can do is talk to my GYN about my concerns and see what he thinks, he should know best.

Thanks Barbara Lee, hopefully tonight will be a good sleep night for both of us, in fact for all of us here, I do't know what I would do if I had a good nights sleep anymore.

Take care and have a peaceful Sunday.
Connie

Well the results are in and I do have Ovarian Failure due to Lupus. I am now on the birth control pill which will give me more estrogen  then straight estrogen would without the side effects of estrogen.

The cancer test came back negative for which we are all thrilled!!! What a relief after 6 months of waiting , now I can quit worrying about it.

So now I wait for a couple of weeks and the pills will take away the hot flashes and night sweats completely, which I can't wait!! I am so excited to know that!!! It has been so miserable having hot flashes and the night sweats.

So all in all my appointment with my GYN was wonderful, great news all around.

Hi Connie.
That is a long time to get your results back I would have been going nuts, so glad that you got good news.

Menopause hot flahes and night sweats were horrible for me I'm glad the worse of it is over. I do get some night sweats I think it could be from the lupus . Good Luck!!! Debbie

Thanks Thickchic and Debbie.

I was so relieved to hear the doctor telling, I was holding my breath waiting on the results. I can't believe it took 6 months from the time of my first bad pap to get the results back. That is crazy in my opionion.

It feels like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders for sure.

The hot flashes are worse for me then the night sweats, with the hot flashes my stomach gets really upset just seconds before a hot flash starts. It's not fair that we should have to go through this stage of life, we should be able to by pass menopause and all of its symptons as well, lol.
