Hi Everyone. I'm back from FL. To recap, my 82 y/o Dad fell off his bike, broke ribs and went to hospital. He had been living in his garage "apartment" the past 4 years with a loser who was using him. Six years ago I flew him to Atlanta and asked him to move in with me, but he declined. Twice within the past year my brother asked him to move in with him, but no.  A week after he was released from hospital a home health nurse checked on him, saw the utter, complete, roach infested filth and the terrible condition of my Dad. She called social services who saved him and put him back in hospital. August 11 he was sent to a skilled nursing facility. He was becoming confused and not eating.  I visited him, stayed a week, flared and went home to ATL. I flew back to FL Aug 29, discharged him and took him to live with my brother. My daughter and I took great care of him while there. Well, I'm back in ATL, hurt like $#(* and slept 12 hours last night. Sorry about the long post. My brother lived alone and is no care giver. My Dad was healthy when my brother asked him to move in. So far, his other grandchildren won't help. Right now I need to focus on healing my flare. Love, Butterflake

Donna, You have really been through it with your dad. It's so hard to take care of a parent when they reach the age when they can no longer care for themselves but refuse to receive help. I remember the stress, not only physical, but emotional that I went through when I was in your place. It was really devastating, and I hope you learn to deal with it and focus on taking care of yourself and your health. I'm so sorry you're in a flare but I'm glad you've recognized that it's your priority to heal yourself.

Fran's right. Please take care of yourself and rest. Let us know how you and your dad get on.

Love,

Pat

Oh Donna,  that is terrible.  I'm sorry to hear this.  Take care of you right now. Your dad is now in good hands.  Make sure you get the care you need now too.

Oh, my, I'm so sorry to hear of this situation and the flare it has put you into. Life's stress is just impossible to avoid, it's it?

I'm feeling good these days and you know I live close by -- please don't hesitate to give me a call if there is anything I can do for you - errands, sit with you, take to drs, whatever. I can even do laundry if forced into it! lol

I know sometimes we like to give our regular support system (your daughter & bf) a bit of a rest, and I really do have free time on my hands, so please call. I don't want to call you and interrupt a nap or anything...

Take care,

Hi Lynn, Ginny, Rosie, Pat and Fran. I'm feeling much better today- the pain is quite tolerable. It helps to be home with bf, dog, 2 cats and 2 finches- not to mention my own bed. My Dad is alone all day while my brother works. I bought Dad a cell phone and I've already called him 3 times, so it probably helps me more than him!    Pat, thanks for the insight. It's helpful to know I'm not the only one who has gone through this.   Lynn, I'm very touched by your offer. More than anything, I can use someone to talk with, so I'll call you next week. Ginny, Rosie, Fran and all my HW buddies, thanks for the encouragement. You're the best! Love, Butterflake

Butterflake, I hope you continue to rest and that you keep feeling better. You've gone through a lot with your dad and I hope things slow down for you now. Try to keep resting even though you are starting to feel better. Traveling is so hard on our bodies. Take care of yourself and I'm glad you are back.

Hi Donna, Bless your heart! I can imagine how sick you are with worry about your dad. My father is getting bad too. Fortunately my mom is still alive and able to care for him. I'm so glad you have Lynn close by. It's great to have somone to talk to on the phone or over lunch or somthing. We all need to really let lose somtimes. Is there some kind of program that will help your dad while your brother is at work? We have what is called the advantage program here. If your income is less than 2 thousand a month they will send over home health care service. I have that and it is a great help for me.
Take care of yourself. I'm glad you got your dad that phone. I can relate to what you said it helps you more than him. We can't help but worry about the people we love.
Love ya

Hi Friends. I'm tired and aching, but still ok today. Hippi, I appreciate the advice and encouragement. Always a good thing! Carol, tomorrow I should have a durable power of attorney for my Dad recorded at the court house which will make getting help for him easier. You have a great idea about having someone visiting him each day to assist. I'll look into that. Thanks again Everyone! Love, Butterflake
