I am sorry I've not been around reading and responding to posts, I will try to catch up soon and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I need some advise:

A week ago I had some ice cream and I ended up with a lot of abdominal pain and diarrhea. For the next couple of days I could eat but it couldn't have dairy in it. Since Thursday night it has progressed into ANYTHING I eat I end up with abdominal cramps so bad that I am doubled over in agony and diarrhea. I'm just not sure what I should do. I don't even know if there is anything the doctor can do for me. Right now I am living off pop cicles and ginger ale. I want to try to eat some soup but I'm afraid of cramping up again. Any advise... remember I am on a gluten free diet so there are many things I can't eat. cry

Thanks guys
Stacie

Hey Jmom,

I can sympathize with the bouts of diarrhea.  I have this too, only there is not one specific thing that causes it.  My doctor gave me a prescription for promethazene that I take every six hours as needed.

Hope you find some relief soon.

(((((((((( Stacie )))))))))))

Sorry you are having such trouble.

I do go thru flares of d too. The pain, doubling over . . . . even water will bring on the cramps. It seems all I can do is ly still to calm it for a bit. *sigh* That's what led me to the GI doc. These d flares were preceded by dry eyes, the roof of my mouth felt scalded, and I'd also have some fatigue, but then the cramps and d would take over. ewwwww You can't even leave the house.

For me, they did a c-scope and found inflammation at the ileo-cecal valve (where the small intestine links with the large intestine) which is a prime spot for chron's to attack. Luckily, I haven't had any gut flares since April. *phewwwwww!*

I was using a medrol dose pack and some cortisone suppositories to deal with it. (sorry if TMI) That did help, but the dose pack wasn't long enough to really end the flares. Next flare, I have rx Entocort (a prednisone that releases and works in the colon). . . and they want to do a small bowel follow thru.

It sounds weird . . . but I really think the prep for the c-scope worked as a kind of colon cleanse and I was feeling pretty rough for a couple weeks after, but have been doing quite well since.

Some of the members of the Chron's forum with chronic d use only liquid nourishment for a while (like ensure or boost) but I'm not sure if you are lactose intolerant too and then I don't know if you could use those. They also talk about boiled white rice. You might be able to try some banana too.

((((((((( Stacie )))))))))) Its so scary when we start adding new symptoms to our list. . . . I hope you don't have another chronic issue now.

Keep us posted.

Blessings!

Oh Stacie, I'm so sorry. With all the meds we have to take it's a wonder we aren't always stuck in the bathroom. You never have to apologize for not being here for people. We know you are here when you can be. Maybe it is a virus going around. My bro has been sick for about 4 days now. Not that it is any consolation. Sometimes it just feels weird to have an ordinary problem being sick instead of lupus related. Not that I have any idea what is causing the problem. Isn't that what celiac disease is like? When I'm sick I live on fudgecycles and oatmeal. Can you eat banana's.I know banana's are supposed to help with D. as does cheese. I just don't know what to say. You really need to keep hydrated though. Try to keep as many fluids in you as possible. That's one thing you don't want to happen on top of everything else.

I hope you get feeling better soon. If it gets to bad go to the hospital. They may at least be able to tell you what is causing it.

If this has already lasted a week -- you are probably dehydrated. An easy test is to pinch up the skin on the back of your hand. When you let go, if the skin stays up or is slow going down, you are dehydrated. Quickest home cures for that are Gatoraide and Pedolyte --they have the right electrode mix and are better than water for dehydration.

My general rule of thumb is that if something lasts more than 3 days, and no one around me is similarly ill, I probably need to march off to the drs.

Since ANYTHING you eat is causing a "doubling over" pain, I'd recommend seeing a doctor as soon as possible.

Just my $.02 !

Thanks guys, I started feeling some better on saturday but was still weak. I get nervous every time I eat and I am having weird pains under my left rib. For now I am staying away from fruits and veggies.. which I am craving like crazy!!!!

Hester, I will check into promethazene and ask my rheumy about it. Thank you

Rosie, I tell you what the double overing pain is worse than labor, the pain is so intense it wraps around into my back. I don't know if I could drink boost or ensure because of the dairy, but I do remember when my grandma was in the hospital they had similar drink that tasted like apple juice, I will have to check into that (thanks for mentioning). Over the last several years I've had these bouts numerous times. Some flares are worse than others and sometimes it triggered by different things. For example a couple of years ago it would happen if I ate fruit or veggies. Just recently I ate was able to eat ice cream every night and grapefruits very often. There just seems to be no rhyme or reason to my loopy gut so I don't know if this is lupus related or something else... probably lupus! I'm going to ask my rheumy about a Medrol dose pack to see if she thinks it would help with these flare ups or we may have to up my Imuran to 150mg.

Carol, it could be a virus.. I don't know but it only hurt when I ate. This is the kind of pain I went thru before I was dx with Celiac but when some of my symptoms didn't improve is when the doctor figured out it was lupus causing the rest of the problems.

Lynnwood, I was able to drink enough and stay hydrated, thank goodness for pop cicles. The next time this happens I will be calling my rheumy immediately.

Thank you Hippi, Judy & Babs for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. I hope each of you are having a great week. Take care
:-)

Stacie,

Don't wait to call the rheumy. Mine gave me the rx for the dose packs and I had them on hand for the next flare. After using them three times, he sent me to the gastro.

Sounds like you should see gastro now. * sigh * Always something new, ya know?

I hope its not Chron's.

Blessings!

Like many here I do not relish the thought of going back to the doctor for yet another round of bloodtests and other kinds of testing, just because I have lupus and yet another kind of pain is rearing its ugly head.  I hate it.  At the same time I am grateful that I have medicaid to pay for all these tests, so they can be done, and hopefully one of them will be able to find some relief for the pain and other symptoms.

I have this pain sometimes under my right rib cage, and they have never found what was causing it, so they lump it in with other symptoms caused by Lupus.  Because my first MRI revealed swollen lymph nodes, the doctors totally ignored the pain I told them about, and sent me to an oncologist, who kept sending me for more MRI's.  Every six months I had this total body scan, for two years.  then I had a heart attack, this ended the tests for the pain.  I am still playing catch up, with the cancer doctor.

My pain however seems to be nothing to what you are experiencing now.  It doesn't even seem related to what is happening to you.

My therapist however did have pain like you describe, and it turned out to be pancreatitis, and her diet had to change drastically.  She didn't smoke, she didn't eat much red meat, but she loved her dairy foods, and she had to give them up.  When she got married she was allowed to sip on a very small glass of wine to celebrate her wedding.

That this pain is causing you weakness also, sends warning bells off to me.

I think I could handle the "taste like" apple juice drink.  I do not like ensure but have had to take it at different times in my life.  Mostly to gain weight, and complete a healthy diet.  I used to think just a few months ago that I sure wish I had those skinny days back;) smilewinkgrin   Now Lupus is causing more shedding of wieght, and I am back to being grateful for being able to gain weight, because Lupus is taking away the pounds.  And I will probably be wishing I could lose again too at some point.

When my therapist had pain similar to yours, she could not eat anything without experiencing the awful pain, so maybe your pain will not be pancreitis.

Hopefully yours will not be pancreatitis.  maybe it will just be another strange symptom of Lupus, and you can at least be able to eat regular food.  I don't know that I could have held out as long as you have without going to the doctor.

I think I practice a running scared phenomena.  Afraid my pain is just another Lupus pain that cannot be cured, and at the same time i am running scared that it will be something else, and I will need more and more tests, just to make sure.

Be Well as much as you can.  Don't worry about this or that thing that you might be neglecting because of this pain.  Worry about you, and the best thing you can do to find some healing for yourself.  I know this is hard, but sometimes we have to do what is best for us so that we can be there when our families need us to be there.  One of my eight grandsons was here yesterday, I fed him big plates of beef stew, which he ate heartily.  turn I don't think it matters to him how clean or dirty my house is.  He does care, quite a bit however, for my beef stew;) I want to be here as much as I can to fix him this beef stew he loves so much.

And thank whatever powers that be, that today it is both mentally and emotionally a good day.

Take care.  My prayers are with you.

Hester

Last night after I posted I had a different pain under my left rib, not the typical Costo pain. It happened about an hour after I ate. It was a stabbing pain that took my breath, then it radiated to the right, right above my belly button. It really scared my husband and I. All I could do was double over, almost calapsing in the floor. I made it to bed and the pain subsided after I laid down. I ate some lunch about an hour ago, waiting to see how I react.

Thank you Rosie, I hope it's not Crohn's either, I don't think it is but of course I'm not a doctor. I've had GI issues for so long I wish I could have a intestinal transplant (ughhh).

Hester, thank you for your kind words and advise. You have sure been through a lot (((hugs)))). I have pain under my left rib which is caused by Costochondritis but this new pain was different and scared me. It's wonderful when people love us unconditionally, children and grandchildren are wonderful blessings from God.

Pat & Barb, thank you for the hugs and prayers. I am feeling ok as of right now, I ate a little about an hour ago and hoping I don't get that same pain like I did last night. I was able to go to work yesterday and ate some soup, well mostly the carrots & broth. I've not been hungry but I know I have to eat.

I get pain under my left rib too. . . especially after eating. It's really hard to find info on. It appears that it is a hard spot to dx. . . but can (among other things) be inflammation of the small intestines. * sighhhhhhh *

I was wondering how you are feeling by now???? Are you any better?

It appears that it is a hard spot to dx

I had a full body mri scan.   I think mri is what it was.  but with that full body scan they have never found what was causing the pain under my right rib.  IN fact they simply stopped looking.  When they found the swollen lymph nodes around my esophagus, they stopped looking for the pain I presented with.  Kept looking for cancer growth, but found none.  If I complained at this point I am afraid they would take the same highway as before.  Plus the pain is not there all the time.  I can live with it, when it is there, or lay down.  Laying down always took the pain away.  I am assuming that laying down took the pressure off that one place of pain.  Now I am laying down more than I am setting up or standing.  Maybe that has caused the pain to lessen in that area.  the pain felt like my ribs were rubbing up against the area and causing pain.  but that is just a guess, and they never found anything to cause that original pain.  Maybe it was fibromyalgia.

I have been diagnosed before with fibromyalgia, but just like Lupus, it was diagnosed by my doctor who died, and my new doctor doesn't trust my old doctor's diagnoses.

Thanks guys, I am doing better. I'm still a little nervous about eating certain things and I'm still hurting a little here and there under my left rib which I agree with Rosie, it's probably inflammation in my intestines either small or large. I will be talking to my rheumy about this in a couple of weeks as I've had more GI problems in the last couple of months than I've had in a year or so and this new pain was a doozy. It may be time for a new med or up my Imuran.

Thank you all for your luv and support, it means a lot to me.

Thanks for the update. I hope the rheumy figures this out. Even if they can't clear the pain, it is comforting to know if it is a pain that can be managed w/o fear of some great damage.

Keep us posted.

Oh I hope they give you somthing to make you more comfortable. It's terrible when you can't eat without regretting it. Have you had you'll gallbladder out? I started having GB problems and the pain would be unbareable for hours if I ate to much or the wrong thing. I had it out in 2000 and for the most part no more problems. Just a few once in a great while.

Stacie,

What was I thinking? Carol's right....could it be your gallbladder? Sounds like what I went through till I had mine out in January. Boy did I feel better afterwards. Something to check out, anyway.

Hope you're having a better day today.

I personally have problems eating certain dairy, especially ice cream, which I think is now Lactose Intolerance. But It only happens with certain dairy or maybe I can tolerate some of it at a time. I take Lactaid now when I eat ice cream or really cheesy things and it helps completely. However, you mentioned it's now happening with anything you eat, so I am at a loss as to what it could be for you. I've also had what I thought were gallstones (though when I went to the ER, no stones were found upon ultrasound). But they did find a hemangioma on my liver, which is also under the ribcage. Apparently the tumor (benign) must have been quite inflamed or filled up and back then, I was working in retail and loading, unloading, and unpacking product all the time. The doc thought maybe that was aggravating it and there is nothing they can do about it on my liver. But maybe it does have something to do with the gallbladder, being it is under the right rib area. In either case, I do hope you can find out what's causing your issues and hopefully get it resolved as no kind of pain & symptoms are any fun to go through.
