Hi everyone,

I haven't been here for a while, but to me losing my job (company went bankrupt) and I got a grant from DVR to go back to school! So I've been studying alot.

Almost 3 months ago now, I happened to notice that I had some sort of rash on my lower legs. On the right side, it's toward the inside leg a little below my knee area; on the left side it's also on the inner area about a 1/3 of the way down my lower leg. The rash is not a large area, rather, it's in smalller patches scattered about. The largest one is more circular to oval, red perimeter and darker in the center, almost bruised looking..but these rashes are not bruises nor are they any sort of scrapes. The rest of the patches are more long and oval in shape and are completely red. They all feel slightly raised about my skin and ever so slightly scaly. They do not itch or cause pain..I wouldn't even know they were there if I didn't see them. There are about 5 patches on the right leg and just 2 on the right. And like I mentioned, they've been there for almost 3 months now, so it's definitely not any kind of bruise, scratch, scrape or something like that, as that would have gone away by now. Also, they have not spread anywhere else, which makes me think it's not something contagious like bacterial or viral. I have tried many over the counter creams and lotions on them, like Triple Antibiotic, Aveeno, Sarna, even Zims Crack Creme and creams to that effect for dermati***. Nothing OTC seems to help them.

I am wondering if ( I tried to describe them the best I can ) anyone else thinks this sounds familiar to them? I cannot visit a dermatologist b/c I've already met my yearly cap on diagnostic tests for the year (since June) and I'm sure a Derm would want to do some testing. Howeever, I do have an appointment with my Rheum for the end of September, so perhaps he might have some clue what it is by just looking at it, I don't know. I wonder if something that sounds like this could be lupus related?

baybreeze, I've had weird rashes that have been on my arms or legs but they mostly seem to show up after I've had sun exposure or if I'm flaring. I would take pictures of the rash in case it goes away before you see your rheumy. That way you'll have pictures to show your rheumy.

It's good to hear from you again - I bet school is keeping you busy.

Hi Hippimom!

Thanks for remembering me! Even though I've been having alot of pain during school (mostly due to my spine issues and the school has the most horrible chairs), and I've been taking many meds to try to lessen my pains.....I am still doing quite well in school, which I'm very happy about.

I don't really spend time in the sun anymore; I use sunscreen and when I'm outside briefly, I'm in the shade as much as possible. Now..what did happen....I should explain first that I also have spine problems (I had severe spinal stenosis, for which I had surgery almost 2 years ago; the surgery helped me alot, but 6 months later I developed severe nerve pains & sciatica due to scar tissue and other reasons). I had a nerve block done for that, which helped, but about 3 weeks later, after the steroids in the shot wore off, I developed a bad flare. It seems everytime I stop taking any kind of steroid (oral or even injected into my spine..when the steroids wear off, I get hit by a freight train! Ahhh, every time I get horrible joint pains, rashes, all sorts of nerve pains and cramps & spasms. Every time I seem to get more symptoms and even new ones i'd never had before. Last summer after my nerve block wore off, I even developed severe light sensitivity in my eyes, i Had migraines almost every day, I got a different rash all around both outer elbows and around both ankles. But those were very itchy. Once that flare up of whatever subsided, I've not had a real flare, except in my lower spine, sacral and legs. But I know that is not lupus related. But about 3 months ago I did notice this new rash on my legs only. Maybe I am having other issues, as I do feel very tired and run down all the time and have gotten very few bouts of hives..maybe it's more of a mild flare. Sorry I'm rambling now.

With my other rashes, by the time I saw my Rheum, the rashes were gone, of course. Last time I tried taking pictures, but they come out too fuzzy! And if I take it from farther away, you can't really see what it is. I've even taken pics with a 10x camera, but to really see the rash, I can't get close enough to get a clear picture.
Does everyone else that takes pics of these sorts of things...have a good camera that can do good upclose pics? Well, in this case, I am hoping this rash stays around until the end of this month as I see my Rheum then. I'll have to wait and see what he thinks...

But thank you so much for the reply! And I hope you are doing well?

Hi Baybreeze,

Your name always makes me think of a wonderful vacation we took, many years ago, to Sanibel, Florida. * great big grin * There was a group of cottages there called "The Bay Breeze" . . .

Pictures. Have you tried using the different settings on your camera? There might be one with a tiny little flower on it. That is for close-ups. If you don't see the little flower, see if you can figure out which setting is for close-ups. That should give you the best picture.

I do get patches of scaly, itchy rash. But it sounds different than yours. For me, the bruising happens as a result of mindlessly scratching through clothes. . . . But it sounds like yours isn't itchy.

If you google rashes . . . and click on images at the top of the search results page, you will see lots of pictures. You might be able to identify your rash that way.

Blessings!

Thank You, Rosie! I love the thoughts of a baybreeze myself, hence why I picked the name. Plus I live sort of near a bay.

I actually have searched through rash pictures and lupus pictures, but I haven't seen exactly what I have, though one of my splotches looks similar to some Lyme's rashes or maybe a few discoid lupus rashes I saw....however, I only have the one spot that is more rounded, though it's red around the outside and darker in the center. It's so hard to tell by looking through all the images. But yes, these do not itch at all, but are slightly rough/scaly. Perhaps they will still be there by late Sept when I see my Rheum, maybe he'll have some thoughts.

Thank you all for your replies!

Hi Baybreeze,
I was researching the net & stumbled upon your posting about your leg rash. I have had the exact same leg rash for a year now & was wondering if you found out what it was. I have not been to the Dr. as I have no health ins. I tried all the creams & lotions the same as you & nothing helps or makes it go away. Is it Lupus related & what was your outcome for getting rid of it. Thank You so much.
