Hi guys, I was just wondering if you feel like you are starting to have a flare coming on and your dr. says at your discretion you can take extra pred, how much do you start off with? I take 10mg. but I took an extra 10 (inflamation). it usually takes a couple of days of taking it before I notice the bad side effects like eating, not sleeping. of course it's a long weekend for my dr and no one is on call. They just say go to hospital if you need to. I'm not feeling the need for that. I don't know if I should take anymore today or not but I don't really feel that the extra 10mg is helping yet and it's been 4 hours. Which usually does start to help by now.
thanks all
carol

Hey Carol,

I do the same thing. I double my dose.  Maybe give it a night and see how you are tomorrow morning?  You might notice a difference if you give it some extra time.

The handy thing is that you really can't take too much, right.  If you need to up it another 20mg, you won't hurt yourself. At least you'll kick the flare hard if you go up to a substantial amount.  You can always taper down if you find it's too much.

I did that in July. I was on 10mg, and felt a flare coming on.  So I went up to 20mg and WHOA... Wrong thing to do.  The flare wasn't lupus, it was Fibro. I felt wickedly awful on 20mg.  So I came way down to 8mg and I felt much better!

Hugs!

I don't go up that much...

I'm down to 9mg now & would probably only go to 13 or 14 if I thought a flare was coming on.

Doubling sounds like too much of a change at once....best to check with your doctor as soon as you get a chance, I bet some want it doubled & some are more cautious - probably also depends on how high you've been previously and other meds, etc, etc

Hope you feel better soon

Carol,

I usually double my dose and then lay down for a long nap; by the time I wake up I am feeling better. I just do that for the weekend and call my doctor monday morning.

I hope you feel better soon.

I don't take pred daily (yet), but my doc allows me take a medrol dose pack at my discretion as well. The first days dose is 24 mg. I usually start feeling better the day after I start it. The only problem is that I start to feel yucky again on the fourth or fifth day when it tapers down. I wish you the best and hope you're feeling better soon. God Bless.

Carol, I take a more conservative increase in prednisone like Lynnwood does, but those were the instruction from my rheumy. I usually do an initial increase of 2.5mg and if that doesn't help, I go up an additional 2.5 for a total of a 5mg increase. But, I also don't have the breathing issues that you have, so you might need a little more. Hopefully next time you see your doc, you can get some more specifics on the best way for you to take your prednisone and increase and taper depending on how you feel.

I hope that as you are reading this, that you have gotten some relief. Hang in there - lots of (((((((hugs))))))))

Hi everyone thanks for the info. I wish i had read it earlier before I took 30mg. Unfortunately nothing seems to have worked. I'm beginning to think it is a bug I picked up with all the hospital and doctors I've seen lately. You know what they say if you wern't sick when you got there you will be when you leave. Today I only took 5mg more. I don't feel any different so I think tomorrow I'll go back to my regular 10mg. and just keep my fingers crossed it's just a bug. You know I just got my flu shot tuesday confused I just thought of that. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I started getting sick 3 days after getting it.?

thanks again

hugs

carol

Hi Carol,

There was no harm in trying right!  At least you know it's probably not a lupus flare.  If you had gone up just a wee bit in the dose you wouldn't know if it was working or not.  I think you did the right thing!

I sometimes feel yucky a few days after my flu shot.  I'll bet that's what this is..... I hope you feel better this weekend!

love
