Do any of you take Prilosec just as a preventive? I've been taking the same combination of meds for quite a while and have had no stomach or GERD issues.

Today, out of the blue, my rheumy suggests I should be taking Prilosec with my morning meds.

Are any of you folks taking it but have never had issues? Just wondering how common using it as a preventative might be.

Thanks,

Hi Lynnwood--
You might try the liver site because a lot of people take it there. I have pretty advanced liver disease and have only been told to take it when I have reflux. Since it causes your stomach to release less acid, it may be something that is kind of cutting edge and really good to do from a preventative standpoint. I take it when things get bad, but am not on it full time, though I probably need to be. Maybe one of the meds causes excess acid?

I take Prilosec everyday, but I had to start taking something after I started on prednisone because I felt like it was literally eating my stomach. The prilosec helped a lot with that, although I do have other GI issues.

I took Prilosec for a long time as a preventative. When I had the bleeding ulcer in the summer, I was put on Protonix and Carafate. I'm told protonix and prilosec are the same. Protonix is Rx and I get free samples from a friend. Prednisone definitely tends to cause erosions after a while. I think it is very wise to take something prophylacticly. Just my 2 cents worth! I took prilosec and now nexium (insurance issues caused change) for preventative. I do not have reflux or an ulcer but my stomach is delicate and taking a preventative has always been part of my regimine since they started me on anti-inflammatories. It helps a lot, if I don't have it for a week my stomach starts to hurt.
