Hello Again everyone-

Well, I went back to my Rheumy who increased my Prednisone to 10mg for 1-2 weeks then taper 1mg a week. I only got one week in and my hands actually got worse. The tendons in my left hand made life nearly unbearable. Yesterday I went back and he gave me a couple of injections to help, and also has decided to try me on methotrexate. I talked to him about his decision to not increase my Prednisone for a short time, and he told me that of all the meds Prednisone is the one that he does not like. He only will prescribe the smallest dose for the shortest period of time until other meds kick in. So after looking at all my bloodwork etc. he gave me this prescription and told me I may have side effects of sores in mouth and upset stomach. I am to take 6 -2.5 mg today; 7-2.5mg next Sat.; 8 - 2.5 mg once a week after. Along with this I am to take 5mg folic acid daily and keep on my chloroquine 500mg 4 days a week and continue my Prednisone taper.

I went and got the script filled and was only told about the upset stomach part, but then I read the literature that came with it. For those that have experience with this drug, could you tell me if thinning hair, and or hairloss was an issue?

Thanks

Hi Free,

My rheumy doesn't like Pred either so she put me on MTX. I have been on it since February to get my joint pain under control, my rheumy wanted to start me on it sooner but I was reluctant because of the other meds I am on. I don't do so well when my meds are changed around. It took a couple of months before I could tell a difference in my pain level in my hips and back but it did work. I still have some joint pain in my hands, feet and back but nothing compared to what it was before.

My rheumy advised me to take it with my biggest meal each week. I have a very sensitive GI tract and never had any stomach upset, except a little nausea. I get mouth sore but it's more from lupus than MTX as it started along time before I went on this med. I usually take 3mg of folic acid daily and can take up to 5mg. I had no experience with hair loss but from what I understand the doses we get of MTX is very small compared to those that receive it for cancer treatment, with those high doses they may experience hair loss.

I hope the med works for you and you get relief from your pain. Hang in there and be sure to take it with plenty of food, you may have a little nausea and feel tired for a day or so after you take your dose but that may improve over time. Take care and let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Stacie-

Yes I was told to take it with a big meal. Meds don't usually bother my stomach, so I hope this trend continues. Thanks for the encouragment- I was really praying for an answer like yours.

You are welcome Liz, I pray the med works well for you. Maybe it won't take as long to kick in for you as it did for me as I am on 3- 2.5mg tabs a week. Please keep us updated on how you are doing and feel free to ask more questions.

Hi Stacie

I notice your dose is quite a bit lower than what I am taking (I am starting at 6 pills and going up to 8). Could I be starting at this higher dose because I only take chloroquine and prednisone?

Hi Liz, yes I think my dose is lower because of all the meds I am on: 125mg Imuran (another immune suppressant med), 400mg Plaquenil, anti-inflammatory, Flexeril (muscle relaxer), etc. I have tried to come off the plaq and nsaids and my body reacted terribly! My rheumy may be leaving room in case we need to increase the dose in the future.

Stacie

Sometimes it is disheartening to think of all the meds that have to be taken, but then I thank the Lord that they are available for the many of us who
need them.

Thanks for you support and will keep you posted.

God Bless

Liz, I agree. I hate taking all my meds but I know if I didn't I couldn't function day to day. God Bless

Hi Liz:

Welcome to our group. You'll find loads of great ppl here. I'm on MTX once again I take 10 pills once a week. I've had no issues with mouth sores or thinning of my hair. I've taken everything except Gold and Arava to treat lupus. I think you should do great. I've had lupus for 21 yrs and if I can help in anyway just give me a holler.

Good Luck,
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Thanks for the welcome. I agree about the wonderful people on this forum. As a newcomer, I just read posts as I am able to. Being new and not knowing alot about this, I am so happy that their are people who are so willing to share their knowledge and experience with me.

You and Stacie have given me confidence in Mx. I was so scared when I got the script but took my first dose last night, and I am happy to say I haven't felt any bad reactions, so hopefully this will be my experience with it.

I have to say, you sound like an extremely strong woman dealing with your issues and offering positive support to me. I thank you for that, and I hope to have the same mindset in 20 years.

Hi there,

I also take MTX for RA,and have been on it for a couple of years now.  Before I started it, I had the worst hip pain ever, and as long as I stay on my 8 pills per week, I don't have the burning sensation in my hips anymore.  I have had some hair loss, but mostly mine comes out  when I wash it.  It took me a good month to get used to it because when I first started it, I felt like I had the flu with body aches, and also had a difficult time staying awake, however this did pass with time.  The one thing to remember is sunsreen even in winter months, as the MTX is really hard on your skin.

Good luck to you.

Hi Momto3

Thanks for your reply. I guess from seeing the replies that Methotrexate really can help. I just finished my second week (7 pills) and fortunately I don't get any side effects. My hands are still really bothering right now though and I have increased my Prednisone for a few days but it isn't working well.

I am just waiting and hoping for this new medication to take effect.

Best Wishes for the Holidays

Liz
