there are some fruits and vegtables that naturally boost the immune system. Are these to be avoided by lupus patients?

i read this article which says to avoid alfala sprouts because they contain an immune system-stimulating compound called L-canavanine

has anyone been told by their DR's to avoid alfalfa or any other fruits or vegtables that may contain l-canavanine?

I haven't been told to avoid l-canavanine specifically, but there are some sprouts & legumes that Lupus patients often react badly to - these are listed in the #1 Lupus text, "The Lupus Book: A Guide for Patients and Their Families" by Dr. Daniel Wallace - a leading lupus researcher.

In general, if you are going to be trying foods or supplements that are listed as "boosting the immune system" it is *very* important to talk to your doctors first. The reason for this is that your doctor will be monitoring your immune reactions, and using a specific drug regime for you that very likely will contain autoimmune suppressors. You don't want to upset the delicate balance the dr is trying to achieve for you, or fight the suppressant meds with boosting foods...we want to calm the war, not inflame it! :-)

Hope that helps,

I totally agree with Lynnwood, I have never been told my rhuemy or any other doctor to avoid any certain foods, but I have read it in several books. I have all of Dr. Wallace's books and a few other books regarding lupus treatment and such and they all recommend avoiding alfa sprouts and they also list certain legumes, just as stated above because they boost the immune system, which our doctors are trying hard to suppress with the meds they have us on.

I've read the same things that the others have talked about. I've noticed that my body just doesn't react well to certain foods very well since I have gotten sick. A don't feel well if I eat some nightshade plants. I used to love raw fruits and veggies too, but can't eat a lot of those either. My body also reacts pretty bad to artificial sweetners and there seems to be a lot of people with Ai diseases who feel sick when the drink diet soda or eat food with artificial sweetner.
