Greetings! I have frequent nausea and stomach pain. My rhuemy tells me to take prilosec because the meds we take cause this. I see you take methotrexate and this was the worst for me as far as nausea is concerned, anyway. The prednisone can cause the nausea or upset stomach, too. Prilosec really helps me and, try drinking milk and eating a little something before taking these meds. Also, do you drink a lot of beverages with caffiene? My rhuemy says this can aggravate the stomach, too. The caffiene, along with the meds, can cause us lots of stomach problems. Check with your rhuemy on this, but mine tells me to keep taking the prilosec even after the fourteen day dose is over. With a doctor's permission, you can exceed the fourteen day dose. Good luck - my prayers are with you!
Prayers,
Audrey Ann

How much and how often are you taking the Naproxen? NSAIDs are really hard on the stomach.  I had to come off my Naproxen a few months ago. I feel better all over now.  These drugs do a lot of yucky stuff.  Bloating, increased blood pressure, internal bleeding, etc.  Take with caution, and let your doctor know okay.

GI problems have been something I have dealt with for years and years, actually even as a very young child. Pain medicines can be the worst on your stomach and intestinal tract as well, as Ginny mentioned. Even over the counter meds like ibuprofen and advil, before my diagnosis in 97' I was taking so many advil to try and get some kind of relief I ended up with a preferated ulcer in my small intestine, needless to say I had to have a bowel resection.

To this day I suffer with a lot of abdominal pain and take 40 mg a day of prilosec to try and reduce some of the effects of meds and pain. Lupus also plays havoic on the intestinal tract, when our body is inflammed that too can become inflammed. So, this is something you may want to discuss with your doctor, he will probably refer you to a GI doc for a work up to ensure nothing serious is going on.

Last August I started with stomach pain. I also began losing weight. My primary ran some bloodwork and found that my "amalase" (sp?), a pancreatic enzyme was elevated. After seeing a GI doc and going through multiple tests, it was determined that I had "lupus induced pancreatitis". I am now taking aciphex (was on prilosec), and it is finally starting to settle down. Yesterday, I sought help with my overall pain level, and I started prednisone. Just a burst and I will come back off, but in the meantime it IS making my stomach hurt. But I know that is just the medicine.
I hope you have found some relief, but if not, please check with your doctor, this lupus is a strange disease.
Take care,
Fran

Hi hun, I'm with most everyone else here. It sounds like your meds could be the culprit. But I'll go out on a limb and suggest it's the plaquenil. Only because others here have said they have problems with it. Some of them change to name brand and it doesn't seem to bother them at much. I am on aciphex as well. I hope you find and the reason soon

Prednisone often causes heartburn and like everyone said NSAIDs can cause stomach pain, ulcers, and even bleeding. Because I take prednisone and celebrex daily, I also have to take Nexium which is a prescription antacid. I really hate nausea so I keep prescription phenegren on hand. I know it sucks to take extra medication to fight side effects, but it's better than getting an ulcer. It's good to hear from you Sweetie. Love, Butterflake

I hope you'll call your doctor and tell him or her what's happening with you. There's no need to suffer needlessly if there is something you can take to ease your pain. Like the other folks who have responded here, I have frequent stomach pain and discomfort and take prescription acifex to help. Let us know what your doctor says. I hope it gets better.

Oh man do i know what you are talking about. I have stomach pain and nausea all the time. I hate it the most I think of everything that happens with Lupus. I see my Rheumie tomorrow so I am going to mention Prilosec and see if he will give me some to see if it will help. I hate feeling sick and having stomach pain.

I hope you get some relief soon.
