Most of you know I'm not shy when it comes to talking about bodily functions, etc.

So for about a week now, every time I have a poop, it's a weird color. Light, light brown.  Almost a taupe color with a hint of yellow to it. I'm looking around my office right now trying to find something that explains the color better.... Hmmmm.  The color of a cardboard box.  So it's pretty light.  I'm usually a dark chocolate pooper. I have no other symptoms that would explain this change in poop color. I am a bit more fatigued this week, but nothing major. I haven't been eating anything in abundance that would change it either.  No new meds. No diahrrea, no constipation. The consistancy isn't different.  If you're still reading this I applaud you :)

I'm just wondering if anyone here has had this happen?  Any ideas what it might be?  I see my pcp next Tuesday. If it's still like this then, I'll tell him about it. I Googled this and liver/bile/gallbladder stuff came up.

Bit of a mystery.

Hi Ginny,

I hope it isn't liver issues. That's the first thing that comes to mind. You might call your doc's office and run it by them.

Will you make sure to update us? Thanks again for taking on the mod position!!!

Blessings!

I've had this happen from time to time - you described it well.  It seems I'm usually feeling more tired and maybe flaring a bit when this happens and I have a hunch it corresponds with elevated liver enzymes.  Mine fluctuate - especially when I'm flaring.  It's happened off and on for years.  I treat it as a signal to pay attention, and slow down.  I hope you'll let us know what your PCP says....I've never actually reported this....always forget - so I'm glad you mentioned it.

Calcium supplements make my feces much lighter in color, like a cardboard box. Also, foods can really effect the color of poop. Iron in foods like spinach can make some people have almost black poop. I know people that get green poop from eating green hello. And we Crohnies talk poop in our forum all the time. As we always advise, any change in bowel habits/movements should be reported to ones doctor so it is good you have an upcoming appointment.

Hey thanks guys. I'll definitely bring this up at my appointment.  Even if it goes away.  This is really unusual for me.  My BMs are very consistant in every way. Even with elevated liver enzymes I haven't had issues with the color changing.  Doesn't mean that it can't happen now though. Grrrrr, I hope I'm not flaring.  I don't feel like I am.

Hi Ginny,

I have been having a lot of issues with my liver enzymes and a lot of the info I have researched said that lighter colored poop can be one of the signs to look for when you are experiencing liver issues. When is the last time you had your enzymes checked? Might not be a bad idea to call your doc and have some blood drawn if the trend continues.

There are actually some possibly disturbing reasons so you diffinently should read this and talk to your dr. ASAP especially if it has been going on for a week

Hey Ginny,

I have the pale colored poop also.  I would never have given it a second thought to this,  if you had not post this for us.  this is remarkable.  the website is really good.  I had no idea this color poop would be important. so I wrote it down to tell the doctor.

Thanks

Hester

Hahahahaha! Carol, you are a hoot!  The color is quite neutral and would do well as a house color. I'm going to submit my poop color and a name for it to all the paint manufacturers.  I'm going to call my shade of paint "Dungbeetle taupe", or maybe "Poop-a-licious",
"#2 will do", "Crap-a-ring-dong-dandy", "Yum from the bum", "Skip to the loo my darlin'", "Reeces Pieces".  Whatever name they pick will be a best seller. cool

That website is excellent. I'm book marking it too. Thank you for adding that link!  I haven't had a BM yet today, so I don't know if it's still like this.  I am wondering if it's from the Coffee Mate I put in my coffee each morning. That would lighten a poop wouldn't it?  Hmm.

My last liver enzyme blood test was only 2 weeks ago.  I get them done every month with all my other Lupus stuff.  My test results were perfectly normal. I can't imagine that within those 2 weeks, my liver has stopped working to the point of doing this?  I don't know. I'm just glad I see my pcp on Tuesday.

I'll keep you all posted!  I know you want me to!  Haha!

haha! Sadly I wish I could say things like that don't happen much but unfortunatly they do. The water pills...depends on the day. I probably still have about 20 pounds of water in my legs and feet but I will gladly take that from what I had been having!!! Hope everyone has an amazing day

Hey Ginny

I think that maybe you are right.  I don't drink coffee so much anymore, and I use lots of  creamer when I do drink it.  Used to drink a lot of coffee, sometimes two pots a day, with a lot of creamer.  and I do not have that color of feces now.  Now it is darker.

so maybe you have revealed what it might be.  It is good to know that it was not liver.  I really have fear about liver problems.  my good friend died of sirrosis of the liver.  and it was not something I wish to do, if I can avoid it.  she was a drug addict, and even after she was diagnosed, she could not give up the drugs.

I'm sure hoping it's not my liver.  The Coffee Mate theory is just that, a theory. My last BM was totally normal.  So we'll see how today's looks!  Hahahaha.  I can't believe I'm talking about this......

Carol, we are sick aren't we.  Did we all grow up with bathroom humor? I did. I blame my dad, cousins, and too many Monty Python movies.

Jojo, I'm glad you feel at home here!  Seriously, no topic is off limits. When you live with Lupus you gain a huge understanding of how the body works, and all its glorious excretions and orphuses.  I can talk about poop just as much I talk about the weather. cool

My BM was more normal today. Not as bleached out, but not dark either.  Now it's more of a peanut butter color. So it's still not where it should be. That's the update.  You're welcome!!

I saw this and joined this site just so that I could pass something on to you Okie. I too used to drink about 4 'vats' (that's the name my husband and I gave to the large cans) of coffeemate a month. I began to experience some strange symptoms just this year (2009). I began to rapidly gain weight no matter how I tried to diet or exercise (I'd been dieting off and on for the past few years) ..and to have slight itching in my hands. I've had allergic reactions before so I recognized the itching. The weight was weird because it felt more like my body was swelling. I couldn't figure out what was going on.

Well long story short..I finally read the label on the 'vat' one day and realized that at 10 calories a teaspoon and 500 teaspoons in a can ..I was consuming 5000 extra calories a week just from the Coffeemate alone. I stopped drinking it..immediately. ..Approximately 2-3 days later I felt 100% better. Within a week I had energy that I hadn't had in years and was visibly shrinking. I began to reform this chest area where just a few days before I'd had nothing but gigantic, swollen cleavage. I could actually put my hand up and feel my chest. I can now reach around and scratch the middle of my back with complete ease. ..And sleep. I can sleep again. I am not obese by any means but I had gained weight (swollen) and my energy level was reduced to an all time low. I had achiness in various parts of my body..all of which began to cease when I gave up the Coffeemate. ..I believe I am allergic to something in it.

This didn't happen overnight. It all started about 2002..when I began to regularly drink coffee at work. My energy level started slipping and I begin to have to work like a demon to keep the weight off. ..That became worse after I married and began to make coffee at home everyday. It reached an apex starting last fall until I stopped having Coffeemate at all during the first week of February (2009).

The symptoms began very slowly then became worse over time. And just think, if I hadn't become aware of the calories I was consuming by drinking so much of it ..I would never have discovered that what I was experiencing were allergic side effects from it. I consider it poison now. ..If someone drinks only a little ..then, to me, it's like they are taking only a little arsenic. Slow poisoning. .If someone drinks a lot of it..they may be rapidly killing themselves. ...So please be careful with that stuff. ..You may be in for a pretty bad experience down the line.

Ginny, I have had liver disease for a long time now and fatty liver will cause baby crap yellow, peanut butter poop. When I am sicker, it becomes white or gray and I know I am very ill, this hardly ever happens but has happened recently. It will change from yellow, to lghter yellow to nearly white to white or whitish gray over time with me. The light yellow bulky stools for me are part of my metabolic problems from the liver. Increasing my antioxidants, doing the whey protein sugar free smoothie thing with added fiber and full-spectrum digestive enzymes (since my rheumie saysthe pancreas often doesn't work as good in people with autoimmune disease) have helped and I can actually take a normal crap usually despite my illness (and I am as sick with fatty liver disease as I can be without being in End Stage Liver Disease --terminal-- but I've been at this stage for several years now).

yellow poo can just be normal on some meds I think. or a result of what you ate. One time as a child I pooped tie-dyed green, red,and yellow at a family gathering. It looked like the worst gi infection mess you could imagine. I was terrified and pulled my mom away from all the company to the bathroom to look at the poo, and she laughed. She had put too much food coloring in the press Christmas cookies.

My cousins and I giggled as we watched the adults sweating bullets and looking scared leaving the bathroom. It was so funny because they were just as afraid as we were and my mom was too embarassed to tell them.

So you can poo in many colors, even many colors at once. I would talk to the gi or rheumie about your liver enzymes and try to get a liver ultrasound if they are high since pred and meds can affect the liver and there is medcation for fatty liver that brings the enzymes down to normal and prevents bad stuff from happening. Anyway, I would ask about the enzymes and maybe probiotic yogurt and lots of fiber in the smoothie too. Sometimes just eating something easy to digest like that helps me and takes a load off the liver, sparing it for meds.

and as you all put together the paint swatches, don't forget something for the liver peouple further along, in the yellow white, whites and grays.

The mountains in the toilet can be caused by letss eeeeee what we eat, illness, intolerance to foods, gi disorders, bm disorders, stress, lactose intolerance, too much of something that color to eat, etc. Please, remember the toilet monster only eats potty and not our rear ends. He only wakes up when you flush, then he goes night night again.

okay....this is really gross but it has me worrried. For the last week everytime I have a bowel movement is it green! Sometimes there is also something that kind of looks like mmucas in my poop and on te toilet paper. I also have been going about 4-5 times a day, which i usually will go 2-3 times. None of my medications have changed and my diet hasnt changed. I actually eating better...not as many sweets as i had been eating. Trying to cut back caleris so I can loose the 50 pds I have gained in the last 2 months from the prednisone! Also a question not related to the topic but another thing I am worried about about. Since I have been on high doses of prednisone, I haven't had a period. Which has been almost 2 months. I have always been right on target..every 28 days and I know its coming. Should I discuss this with my doc? If so should it be with my primary (I have only seen once) Nephrologist(who is controlling all my meds right now) or my Rhuemy(she is a female)! Or should I give it a little more time. I thought i was gonna start about 2 weeks ago because I broke out real bad and started feelin like I was about to have a flare but it lasted about a week and I started feeling better. Grr...my body has been changing so much nowadays...I don't even know my own body anymore!

Hi Amy,

Poop dilemmas are so much fun to talk about aren't they?!  The likely reason your poop is green and has mucus in it is because there is bile getting into your bowels.  Your liver is doing something funky. I would make an appointment with your family doctor. You can probably get in to see them much faster.  If it's not your liver, then you're eating A LOT of spinach or something!  The mucus is what tipped me off that it's your liver.

It's SUPER common to have an irregular period when you're on high doses of prednisone. No need to worry about that at all. It'll work itself out eventually. For now, be happy you don't have a period!! Woo hoo!  If you're concerned, bring this up with your family doc too.  But it really is extremely common.

Blessings!
Ginny
