Hi Everyone,
Went to the rheumy today and she thinks that my lupus is active again. She is suggesting celcept or imuran as my kidney function is at 28% now. I also have some new lesions that tested positive.
The last time my lupus was active was ten years ago and they did not use these drugs. Any info would be helpful, I especially would like to know if the make you sick.

I'm sorry to hear that you are active again. Bummer! I have used both drugs. I was recently taken off of Imuran because of bone marrow suppression, been on it for about 5 years. I know some people have had great results with cellcept and imuran. I didn't realize how much the imuran was helping until I had to go off of it and flared big time! I will be praying for you Marsha. Keep us posted on your situation. Judy

Hi Marsha,

I am sorry to hear that your lupus is active again. I know what a bummer it is to have it in remission and then have to go back on meds. I am currently taking immuran, I have been on it since Oct. 2008 and so far have had no issues what so ever. It takes awhile to see the full benefit, but I am beginning to see positive results from it and have not had any nausea or any other side effects thus far. I have been on other immunospressants that did make me sick to my stomach and I never did have any benefits from, but so far the immuran has been nothing but good.

The main thing you and your doctor have to do is consider the benefits vs. risks for you and go from there. If the benefits out weigh the risks then it most likely is something you should consider.

I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Marsha,
Sorry to hear your Lupus is active again.  I've been on Imuran for 9 years now. The drug has definitely been around for a long time, and has been used for Lupus for many, many years.
I've had tremendous success with it, and the only side effect I have is a slight drop in white blood cells, and a very slight increase in my liver enzymes.  Everything is within normal ranges though.  Some people get upset stomach and some hair loss during the early stages of being on it and then those go away.  Some people also don't do well on it. Whether it's Cellcept or Imuran, you just have to try one out and see how you do. The reactions are different for every person.

I've been on both, with no side effects from either. The 2 years on Imuran did nothing for me at all. By then my cognitive dysfunction was so bad I couldn't even drive.

So then we tried Cellcept and within 3 months I had a great improvement in brain function, and took it for 1.5 yrs (about the limit for Cellcept). Since then I have continued to improve and had have clear blood results for almost a year now. I did have the side effect of some minor hair thinning, but nothing else - I'd I'd willingly trade some hair for having a brain anytime!

Everyone reacts differently, although Imuran is used more often as it is less potentially damaging and can be used longer. The Cellcept is a cancer drug, not FDA approved for Lupus yet, although more and more rheumies are trying it out.

Hope that helps,

Hi Marsha, I am sorry your lupus is active again (((hugs)))). I have been on Imuran for 4 years and it's been great for me, I started off on 50 mg and now I am on 125 mg. I have some nausea from time to time so I am always sure to take it with plenty of food. I have my labs checked every 2 months and they've only been "off" a couple of times due to the med, usually they are off because of lupus.

Please let us know if you have any other questions and keep us posted on how you are doing. Take care
