Well, I find something that works, and of course my hyperallergic body has to cause trouble. I was using restasis and early on I got kind of stuffed up nose when I used it. Flonase took care of that, its a common side effect I guess, it was listed on the insert. So no big deal. Anyway, last time I used it, my sinuses got stuffed up as usual, and my doc would not write me a script for more flonase, though she said she would. So anyway, I started getting a really bad headache. Then it was crushingly bad, and I had neck pain too. I could stand light and sound, so it wasn't a migraine. My husband put his hand on my head and I was burning up with fever. I had been taking tylenol and a baby aspirin to get rid of the headache. He took my temp and it was 101 on tylenol. Then, as the drug wore off, the fever and headache went away.

I have never had a reaction like that, but have been troubled with big painful styes inside my eye socket and now I think it may have been from the restasis.

I thought this info might be good to look out for.  I never suspected the sinusitis to progress to something worse. Now I'm back to drops. I wonder if this means  I'm allergic to cyclosporin completely or that I have some kind of infection that flares up due to the immunosuppression from the restasis. The sad thnig is that the restasis helped me fromthe first dose, which is unusual.

Hi Marji,

I, too, have had a bad reaction to restasis.  But my reaction was way different than your's.  The restasis highly irritated my eyes and actually caused severe inflammation in my right eye, even while taking steriod eyedrops to counteract the inflammation.  My rheumy said many people cannot tolerate restasis, and evidently I'm one of them.  Your reaction sounds quite a bit more severe.  Are you sure you didn't just have a virus that coincided with the administration of the drug?  I'm not doubting you; that's simply the type of explanation I would get from my rheumy if I had a similar reaction (which I did to sulfasalazine).

If I were you, I would never take restasis again.  Fortunately, it's not a life sustaining drug.

Thanks El, I constantly have some kind of issues with my lymph nodes and salivary glands and do suffer from chronic sinusitis, it may all be due to some kind of infection, but they say sjogrens. Since they never biopsy and test anything, its kind of just a guess. I felt like I got meningitis temporarily from it. It did feel like it triggered an infection. But I'm afraid to ever use it again. Unfortunately, cyclosporin is one of the drugs used in transplants, and if I ever need a liver transplant, it could be a problem. But odds are I wouldn't make the list anyway because of everything else.

It's hard to tell if the Restasis is to blame. This article talks about what it is and how it works; it might be helpful.

Thanks for the article. Definitely the cyclosporin, its reproduceable. I'm very sensitive to meds. Within 10 or 15 minutes of use I run a high fever, get a bad headache and feel like crap.

It may be allowig some kind of infection to become active but docs can't find an infection, and the sinusitis is a common side effect.
