I have been on Plaquenelle for a long time now and about a month ago I noticed a weird rashy brown thing on my neck under my left ear. It didn't hurt , is about three inches long and wide and just looks like a bunch of clusters of freckles or something. My skin color is very white, so it is very noticable. To me it looks a dirty mark, even though it isn't.

Recently I have lost about 10 to 15 pounds again, very quickly. And at my Rheumie appointment last week he also noticed the same brown marks around my mouth and chin. I had noticed that as well but didn't think to much about it.

According to the Rheumie, because I have lost so much weight the dosage of plaquenelle is to high for me and is causing my skin to pigmantate, (is that a word?). He lowered me to one pill a day to see if that will help. He can't tell me if it will go away or fade or come back.

Has anyone else had t his happen before? My skin is going brown in patches is the best way I know how to describe it and it really stands out.

Thanks so much,
Connie

Hi Connie,

I don't take plaquenil but I am pretty certain that it can cause skin disoloration.  Lots of members are on the med so they'll be able to give you more info.  I hope it will go away for you too!

Connie,

I have been on Plaquenil for about 5 years now and YEP - I have the "brown" skin discolorations on my face (both cheeks) and also my arms.  It does get darker over the summer and if I stay at 400mg  for a long time.  I am able to cover up and even out my cheeks with foundation & powder.  The spots on my arms I use the Jergen's Gradual Tanning lotion to even them out if they really bother me, but I guess I have gotten used to them.

HTH!

Connie,
I have the dark brown patches on the sides of my face. It might be from the plaquenil, but I have some that happened from before I was on anything. It can happen for a number of reasons:liver to hormones to adrenal glands. The adrenal glands can get messed up from prednisone or other steroids. I would go to a dermatologist and they can run proper bloodwork to check it out. It might be a sign of something that can be treated or should be treated. My hyperpigmentation is from my adrenal glands and it is a sign of another problem.

I always go by, if it bugs you, get it checked out. I hope to get mine checked out soon.

Hi Marji, Ellen and Ginny.

Thanks so much for the replies. So these spots can be caused by the pills as well as other things? Boy having diseases sure is confusing as to what all they can do to you. I am glad that I am not alone in this skin discoloration thing though I am sad that any of us have to suffer from it.

I think I will see if I can see a dermatologist if it gets any worse. I have noticed it on my cheeks now, I have a tiny splotch of it on my right cheek in the shape of a tiny heart, lol, how special is that eh?

Anyway thanks a lot again ladies, I will keep an eye on it and if it gets any worse at my next appointment I will ask to see a dermatologist about it.

Have a great day, the sun is shining here for the first time in long time, we have had rain here for the last 6 days straight!!

So much for our summer,lol.

Connie

Connie, the cream they give yuo to fade it is quinine based like plaquenil is. Ironic, huh?
As mentioned above, if you can stay out of the sun it may go away, it is that the skin is overly sensitive to the sun. Wearing heavy sunscreen helps alot. I forgot.
