Hi Everyone,  I was just wondering if anyone had any experience using the Mirena IUD.  I had mine implanted Monday and other then some mild cramping and very light spotting I've had no problems.  I've read some good things and some bad and was just wondering what the Lupies thought.  Thanks.

Hey Jennifer,

I've heard very good things about it actually.  It was an option for me but I decided to go for the gusto and have a hysterectomy wink .  It's a good option for us because it doesn't contain estrogen which makes the risk of clotting much higher.  So if you have APS or any other clotting disorder, you need an option that only has progesterone in it, and the Merina is it!

I hope it works wonderfully for you!

Thanks Ginny. I was so afraid of any of the estrogen based methods of BC because it seems they keep changing their minds on whether or not it is a good option for lupus patients, some even say it can trigger flare. We had been using NFP, as we are Catholic, but it seems like my PCP wants me to start MTHX and I know they require some means of artificial BC due to the incredibly high incidence of birht defects. Thanks again for the reply.

I actually have the Paraguard (copper IUD) which has no hormones. Because my history of migraines and clotting risks, that was the only option she gave me short of a tubal ligation. I'm not sure why she didn't give me the Mirena option and I wish she would have because the copper IUD causes bad cramping and very heavy bleeding. It's been 2 years and now I'm considering the tubal ligation.

Good luck with the Mirena, the one thing about an IUD is its nice that you don't have to "think" about bc.

Thanks for the imput dbab. the Mirena has strings that DH can actually feel during sex. Anyone else have this problem? What kind of solution did you come up with? It really puts a damper on things. Thanks for the imput.

They are actually there so you can check on the placement every month. Your doc may be able to go in and cut them a bit shorter so that it may be less of a bother for him. My husband did say that he feels them too but it doesn't bother him much.
