I'm being tested for Lupus and get my results tomorrow. However, I'm just wondering if there is a connection between tooth decay and Lupus? I know certain medications can increase it, but what about Lupus in general? For 23 years I had NO cavities but now that I've been becoming more sick with more flare-ups, I had 12 cavities that last time I went to the dentist! And I have impeccable dental habits. I can see more that I need filled too shakehead

Just wondering if anyone else experienced an increase in tooth decay with Lupus?

Thanks!

This is a great question!!!! I don't have Lupus, but I do have RA and since my diagnosis, I have had similar issues as you! I even cut out sugary foods, no soda etc.  I brush/floss like crazy and still every check up..surprise, I need a filling or two. Are you taking MTX by chance? I've wondered if this is a cause or if it the autoimmune itself. Either way, I share  your frustration!

Twinkiet..This is totally off topic, but I noticed you have Reglan in your list of meds.  Do you have gastroparesis as well? Sorry, but I don't come across many Reglan users, so I thought I would ask.

Good question. I never had a cavity in my life until shortly after the birth of my first child, that is also when the early symptoms of lupus started. As the lupus has progressed, the teeth have regressed! :-) I know my dentist said the sjogrens causes a lot of dental problems - could it just be autoimmune in general?
I take extra calcium citrate as well as a daily vitamin. Also started using "Oasis" - a mouth rinse that helps out with the dryness.
Good Luck. I have learned to really dislike going to the dentist!
Take care,
Fran

I am having dental issues as well. I have had teeth break off at the gum line. Over the
past few years. I am now wearing a partial plate on the top. My bottom teeth are giving
me prblems now. I also have osteoporosis and wonder if that might be a contributing factor. I
am on Boniva, and calcium and vitamin D supplements. Sometimes I wonder if I will
end up with dentures, top and bottom.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a pro on this. The dry mouth from Sjogrens causes cavities. Saliva normally keeps the teeth washed (so to speak) and when you quit producing saliva, everything sticks to the teeth and they decay. I really like ACT Restore mouthwash. It builds minerals on the teeth and I noticed a difference right away. I also often use Oral Balance gel at night before bed to moisten my mouth and Biotene toothpaste to increase saliva. Lastly, never use a mouthwash with alcohol. It actually drys your mouth making your breath worse. BTW, I had dry mouth a couple of years before being diagnosed with Sjogrens. I hope this helps Ladies. Love, Butterflake

There is also a Biotene mouthwash which I use & like. Much more pleasant than the stuff w/alcohol in it, and so much better for you!

I have been having problems with my teeth as well and I spoke with my dentist about it.He said that the autoimmune diseases do cause dental problems and that what I am doing is not the problem, it's the disease that is the problem. I have plaque build up from dry mouth and have problems with my teeth from dry mouth as well.

It's an ongoing vicious problem with Lupus. And an expensive problem getting my teeth fixed, lol.

yep - me too! both my GI & my Dentist told me it is an autoimmune thing, I also have Crohn's which affects front start to finish of your GI tract and it can cause tons of dental issues.  every year it is either a cap, cavities or even an absess...and we have NO dental insurance, so it is very expensive.... I totally feel your pain - last week I spent $300 on having (3) cavities filled in 2 days.... shakehead
