I saw my rheumatologist today and, based on the picture of my flaming malar rash and the list of symptoms I sent him by email, plus my high levels of anti-DS DNA antibodies, he gave me a prescription for Plaquenil. He says he does not want to increase my prednisone if at all possible.

He believes I either have lupus or an "overlap syndrome"....some sort of CTD. They took blood but I won't get the results until I see him again in a month. Now I'm on my way to see an ophthalmologist to get an eye clearance to take Plaquenil (color vision test?).

I don't WANT to have lupus or whatever!!!! :tantrum:

Well, of course no one wants lupus.....

But I had to have my 30 seconds of angry venting! :)

Does Plaquinel have side effects that I should be aware of?

Some people get a bit of an upset stomach when starting on plaquenil - taking it with food is recommended.

It's a 'field of view' eye test you want, and you need to take one at least once a year. Sometimes after a while peripheral vision is affected, but that is very rare and disappears once you stop taking plaquenil.

Thanks Lynnwood!

I did see an ophthalmologist to get a clearance to take Plaquenil, and she ran lots of tests, including field of view, color vision, glaucoma, and she dilated my eyes to look at the macula. All was OK so I've started the medication. I'm taking it in the evening after dinner....no stomach ache yet!
