The first couple of days I took it everything seemed ok, now when I take it I get GI cramps, I feel jittery inside and my chest hurts!!! Now granted it could be the flare causing the chest pain, but the others stuff has to be caused by the pred. I was supposed to take 3 tabs today but I only took two and didn't get the cramps?!?!?! Should I call my rheumy or is this a normal side effect?

Hi Stacie,

Sorry that you're having these issues...did you take the pred with food? I always take mine with food and it seems to help with the GI issues. Unfortunately prednisone causes or exacerbates acid reflux; I actually have esophageal spasms when I take my prednisone sometimes and they can feel like a heart attack! Pain right in the center of my chest. My GI doc said that the spasms could be triggered by taking the prednisone.

As to feeling jittery, I did feel that way at the beginning but it went away pretty quickly (few weeks).

Of course, these are just my experiences; if you're really concerned you should definitely contact your doctor about the symptoms!

But please take your full dose of prednisone! It's dangerous to reduce the dosage on your own!

Take care!

You can take OTC Prilosec with the prednisone, it should help ease some of your reflux & spasms.

Although I've never had issue like you are having, my Dr. *makes* his patients us the Prilosec to prevent any possible long-term not-noticed issues from occurring.

Cheers,

Thank you JoAnn & Lynnwood,

I have been taking Prilosec in the morning and taking pred with lunch and didn't have these problems at first. I started it last Friday and didn't notice this problem until a few days ago. I started out on 4 tabs (5mg each) and only decreasing 1/2 tab each day. If it continues I will call my rheumy on Monday. THanks again

Stacie, I've been taking Prilosec in the morning and Pepcid AC at night, plus sleeping with a wedge to elevate my upper body. The reflux has been really bad for me on prednisone.

The good thing for you is that it sounds like you're on a course of pred that's tapering very rapidly, so you hopefully won't have these problems very long!

(((hugs)))

Oh, Stacie, don't ask that question! Please don't ask that question!

Recent research has shown that if you expect to get sick you are more likely to do so, while if you expect to feel better you probably will. They don't yet know how or why this works, and the research hasn't been finalized. I found it very interesting and in thinking back over the course of my disease I have to admit it might be true for me.

I hope you feel better soon,

Oh Lynnwood, you are right! Things could always be worse, I will think more positive! I think a lot of what I'm going thru right now is a flare from stress at work, etc. My body and immune system are very weak right now and my WBC is 2.7.

Stacie, I'm so sorry you're having bad side effects to prednisone. I was hoping you'd experience just the opposite. If you're worried, it's always advisable to call your doctor and make sure your not having a dangerous side effect. Please don't get sick again! You've been through enough.

I am so sorry you are having a hard time with the prednisone. I wish I could offer more than a willing shoulder but I have not had any problems on pred, then again my highest dose has been a dose pack or 20mg depending on if you mean ever or extended period of time.
