Are you tapering down on prednisone? This might sound weird but I get what it sounds like you are describing when I can taper my pred...I will keep a heating pad around when that happens. Doesnt help a lot but takes the edge off!!

not really swell up but its tender to the touch and it radiates up to my hip...could this be from my avascular necrosis in my hips

Ouch! I didn't remember that you have avascular necrosis in your hips. Did you know that it most often affects the head of the thighbone - the femur. Could it be happening in your knee? Sorry, but when I read threads like this I get so irrationally angry all over again at prednisone. I wonder if you need something stronger for pain than Darvocet.

Take care of yourself.

I dont know if this relates, but my knees sometimes hurt very bad at night and if you feel under the knee cap as best you can you can feel the heat. It is lupus arthritis they say as the damage is minimal. I do test positive for rheumatoid factor at times and have family hx but hands not bad enough, not enough damage inthe right joints. I have problems with my hips and spine and there was some suggestion that some of the pain was nerve related from nerve root compression in lumbar, sacroiliac. Also, bengay helps, but there is a Volteren gel that is a muscle relaxant gel that you apply topically. It helps with my hard muscles, and also with tendonitis/arthritis in knees and shoulders. it can be as strong as taking a pill, but not so hard on the liver---and maybe not the kidneys, I don't know--because it is topical. The only topical muscle relaxant I know of. It is sedating.

Also, I sleep with a pillow under my knees and I think if it is not just right it really contributes to it, so I change that some when I have a bout of it.

I hope you feel better. Lidocaine patches do wonders too, and they can be cut and applied to knees and to your hips and spines. I don't know how hard they are on kidneys, but theyare a way for me to have relief with abad liver, they help alot at night. You may need a prior approval if on medicare because they are expensive. They help alot.
Take care,
Love, Marji
