Hi everyone, I have a treatment question.

I've been running a fever on & off for 5-7 days now. I don't feel bad, but have a few fever blisters (hadn't been taking my Valtrex regularly as it's not really needed most of the time).

I recently went down from 5 mg Prednisone to 4 mg.

Other than the fever (and the resulting freezing to death) I don't feel bad -- maybe a little more tired than usual but not much.

Other than Ibuprofen, do you guys think I need to pursue other treatment? I am getting a little tired of the fever and the HUGE blue/gray hollows under my RED eyes, but....

Thanks to all who read,

How high does the fever get? Are you taking Ibuprofen and still have a fever?

I think the fever is below 100 - I have 3 thermometers and get readings from 96.2 all the way to 99.8. Nothing much to speak of, but I'm tired of freezing when the house is heated to 72 degrees.

And I have been lax and tend not to take Ibuprofen regularly, so that is the non-medicated temp.

I'm not being a very good patient!

I would give your doc a call...Especially if you are immunosuppresents you might need the extra boost of help to get over what you have. That is how my fever started in early Sept...It would be gone during the day but return at night to about 99.8. They put me on some antibiotic (don't remember what one) and my temp was back to my 96.9 a few days later. They said I had a UTI but the odd thing is I didnt have any symptoms except a temp and chills.

Isnt freezing to death the worst?Ugg...Sorry Lynnwood. Hope you start to get warm!!!

I was wondering if I should just go back to 5 mg from 4 mg of pred. I have my drs blessing to go up/down by 1 mg per month at this point.

Just the regular meds -
Plaquenil & Prednisone
(+ Xanax & Trazdone <"sleep aids">),
(+ Wellbutrin <antidepressant>),
(+ as needed Nystatin <systemic yeast infections>),
(+ as needed Valtrex <fever blisters>)

Anyone else want to vote on whether dr visit is needed? GP or rheumy?

Hope everyone is having a good day,

Hi there. I had a similar situation about 3 weeks ago. My son got a cold and right after that I got my regular flu shot(not H1n1). I also found out I had a UTI(no symptoms except some lower back ache and some spotting once later that night but stopped I think because I was put on antibiotics) Anyway a day or two after I started running a fever of 99.4 and my reg temp is around 96.6/96.7. It also fluctuated mainly in the 98's to 99.8. I had it for a week and then I got the head cold and laryngitis. I am STILL having symptoms of the head cold. No fever or throat problems just mucus in my throat and stuffy/runny nose. I get the mucus up and spit out what I can(sorry I know its gross! lol) but it doesn't seem to want to go away. Dont they say when any and not just all of the mucus is green it means infection? Cuz mine is only sometimes but its still a lot and its getting on my nerves! lol I think you should let your rheumy know(I keep in contact with mine through email)and make an appt with your PCP just to be on the safe side. I was wondering if I should contact mine about this mess? Bleh. Hope you feel better.

P.S. I am only on the Plaquenil not Pred....but I wish my dr would treat my disease and not the pain!

Lynnwood,

Hope you are starting to feel a little warmer. I saw my rheumy for my regular appointment in September and didn't even think to mention that I had been running a low grade off and on fever. But my DH remembered and questioned the doc. Doc put me on an antibiotic and that seemed to do the trick.
A call to the rheumy couldn't hurt, better safe than sorry!
Take care, Fran

Hi Lynnwood--
I"m so sorry you aren't feeling well. The weather has been lousy down here, I don't kno up there. Has the nystatin helped any?  I would maybe see if you can see the doc for the chills, maybe your endo is a little out of whack due to pred. I know my thyroid keeps my temperature low so when I runa fever it is 98 degreesand they don't believe I have one, and I am left to feel awful, and don't get antibiotics as soon as I should. Low temps (hypothermia) can make you feel realy bad and cause brain damage.  I use a beating pad to keep my temp up and have been burning alot of firewood in the fireplace.

I hope you feel better. These days with the flu, its scary to go to the doc sometimes.  I try not to go unless I got to go.

Lynn, my vote is to call your rheumy's nurse and ask for her advice. What you describe sounds exactly what happens to me from time to time (it happened for a few days last week) and I take to my bed and assume that it's a little flare. But with all the viruses going around, I think it warrants a call.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hi Lynn. Just one more vote for you to see the doc. Since I never run fevers, chills are my main indication that I have an infection. When I see my internist for chills he usually prescribes an antibiotic. BTW, thanks for all your support- you've been great. Get well OK? Love, Donna
