I have inflammatory bowel disease (either crohn's or ulcerative colitis) and have dealt with those symptoms for years now. Lately I've been having trouble, but having some new symptoms such as muscle pain in both calves. I also sometimes notice a little redness on my cheeks, usually when I wake up (I think it may just be covered by make up during the day). I'm starting to wonder if it could be the beginning of lupus. It just seems like a little sunburn, and sometimes the sun does come in my bedroom window on me. It doesn't feel like a sunburn. It's light enough that I easily ignore it, but now I'm trying to figure out if it's a clue as to what it going on. Docs have run a bunch of tests regarding my leg pain with nothing showing up. It has been an issue the last few times my IBD has flared up and it's not a symptom of that disease. My leg pain has been severe at times, making it extremely painful to walk. It's been in the achilles tendon and up the calf muscles.

I guess I'm trying to figure out how do you know, or figure out, if you have lupus? I don't know if getting treatment sooner rather than later is better, or if I'm just going to have to see if other symptoms come into play. The pictures of the face rash that I've seen look worse than the flushed look I've been getting so I don't know if this is worth mentioning to my doctor or not.

I did have a positive ANA test but they said it was because of the IBD.

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi heatmiser, It's very common to have overlapping disease. You do have something going on. If you don't have them get a record of the labs you have had done. a Possitive ANA is one of mean sign. but the rash also. I have leg problems as well but after 6 months on plaquenil they started to improve.
I would find a rheumy that no about auto immune disease. Some are only trained for arthritis. take pic. of your rash because they won't be there probably when you see the doctor. I'm sure with your other health issues you know the drill when talking to doctors. Lupies tend to run fevers so you might try to take your temp twice a day and document it. for the doctor. usually under 100.00degrees
You asked about weather it was better to find out sooner or later. I would say if you can find somthing that will help you enjoy a better quality of life you should jump at the chance.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

No I don't take boniva. I'm noticing the face flush seems to be when the sun comes in the window on me. I'll have to watch it but I don't think it's happening on other mornings.

Right now the prednisone seems to be keeping things under control, except for my IBD symptoms. I'm also on an antibiotic to see if that will help. Just put in my 2 week notice at one of my jobs hoping a little less stress might help.
