I feel silly asking this because its so trivial but it is also driving me crazy. Since I am switching meds, my joint/muscle pain has spirled out of control. I am used to the pain but I am having shoulder pain so bad at night I can't lay down. it first started in my left shoulder about 3 weeks ago and this past week it moved into my right shoulder. When I do lay down and I breath it is like a someone stabs underneath my shoulderblades. Any experience this? Any ideas of how I can actually have a night laying down in my bed and not sitting up? I have tried pillows in all different sizes and shapes but they didnt help!!!

i would seek your doctor for an mri you are on prednisone and it does affect bones and muscles... maybe its just an out of whack shoulder.. alternate heat and cold.. but do it in 20 min increments.. try a warm shower and let it beat at your back then go to bed hoepfully it will loosen it up quite a bit.. i would ring your primary and ask to be seen..sorry your hurting..

A few months ago I started having elbow pain that kept me awake and finally got so bad one night that it sent me to the er. A bone scan was ordered that came back normal. After I started taking lyrica the pain subsided. We sometimes forget that fibromyalgia often accompanies AI diseases, and believe it or not, it can be crippling. I've had much worse pain from fibro than I have from lupus.

Just something to think about.

Hi, visiting from my usual forums (diabetes, UC, OA.) Please do see your doctor, and perhaps even request an orthopedic consult. Steroids such as Prednisone definitely affect the bones, and can cause serious and possibly progressive damage. I developed osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis) in my right shoulder from long-term steroids. That is a condition where the bone loses its blood supply and begins to die. It is horribly painful and progressive, but can be treated successfully.

Good luck to you, and gentle nights of sleep.

Hi hun well I guess I'll just throw my 2 cents in too. I was having a lot of pain in my right should. My rheumy sent me for some kind of weird looking xray while I was laying down. Anyway I found I have a torn rotator cuff. Since I do very little activity these days I am pretty sure it has to do with this disease or the drugs. It hurts occasionally when I am in bed and I gt up and sleep on the couch with a heating pad. Not sure if it's the heating pad or the 15 mil. of vicodin but I do get to sleep. You should probably see the doctor. being sick and not sleeping well is not a good idea.

Hey ladies....Thanks for your advice. I am more and more convinced that this is something to do with my arthritis than anything else. Because almost all my joints are 2-3 times their normal size and are very painful...Don't you love switching meds. NOT! I am getting bloodwork done in a few minutes to see if the med is helping anything and then see my kidney doc tomorrow. I will mention it to him but sure he will tell me to wait to talk to my Rhuemy on the 11. Oh well...

Amy, isn't arthritis a pain in the neck? Or shoulders, hands, fingers, knees, etc. I have osteoarthritis in my right thumb and I was beginning to think that nothing would help it. It became so painful just to move it and was twice as big as my left thumb. Then suddenly it started hurting a little less. Go figure. I guess these things can come and go, and I hope yours goes far far away!

OH Pat, yes this is a pain in the neck, sometimes literally. LOL! I am glad that your thumb doesnt hurt as bad. One thing I don't understand is how one day my pinky is bigger than my thumb and then the next day its perfectly fine and my elbow is huge. Can anyone explain to me how it can move around so much! Almost be disabeling one day and then the next day almost like you don't have any problems???

Ok, this shoulder pain is getting worse and lasts all the time. Weather I am sitting up or laying down, whenever I breath in. And no, its not the same feeling as pluerisy. I am also starting to have the same type of pain right below my ribcage on my left side and it is in the same spot on my back. Sometimes it such a stabbing sensation that you can see my rib area spasiming...Any ideas??? I dno't want to bother my doctors unless it gets unberable.Hot showers are not letting up on the pain...WAAH!!!

Amy, I get that kind of pain sometimes and the only thing that helps is a chiropractic adjustment. It really does work. The pain I get under my shoulder blades is the worst. I hope you can get some relief fast!

I have the most ungodly pain in my left shoulder. When it comes on, they both hurt but the right one is just a mere ache. The left is a screaming fiery ball of deep achy pain. 12 on a pain scale of 1-10! smhair I have taken Prednisone, Motrin, Arava, Methotrexate, Plaquenil, everything......now, my rheumy wants me to take Imuran. I'm terrified to take it because of my reaction to the other Biological's and I spent more time in the ER than I did at home. Once you've been in the ER several times for the same searing pain in your gut again and again, and they've ran bloodwork and x-rays etc. to no avail, they start treating you like you're a hypochondriac or a drug seeker! I'm so over that treatment from the medical community that I've settled with severe shoulder pain and joint pain and back pain and swelling and edema of the face and unstable blood pressure and bell's palsey. My rheumy is going to drop me because I don't want to take the meds! I watched my mother suffer for a month after we took her off life support, screaming in pain with no relief. Why? Because they had her on so many drugs for the Lupus and everything else she was DX'd with as a result of the malfunctioning immune system she had, that the pain meds DID NOT WORK for her when she really needed them most! Her body metabolized the water in the med and kept her alive longer in unbearable pain. She was tortured! I refuse to go out like that! I will take the meds when there is NO OTHER CHOICE. I resort to this out of fear from what I witnessed and my symptoms are mirroring my mothers almost to the T! Foolish? I may be, but all my family is gone (deceased) and I am a single mother of three young children. I am only 38 and my kidsare 7, 12 and 17. I gotta be around for my kids, and do not ever want them to witness me as I did my mother.  If anyone has any better ideas, I always listen and hope there's a definitive answer to my painful problem. I appreciate the input.
Peace, love and gentle hugs.
Heidi
