I suspect plaquenil for giving me some episodic diarrhea. I am 100 mg dose and take it with my supper. Did they happen to anyone else and did it eventually stop with the diarrhea side effect?

It helps so much with the fatigue and pain. I have a sensitive stomach and perhaps I shouldn't have eaten that salad for lunch yesterday. Boy, did I ever have to go a lot today and eventually I didn't make it back home in time. What a mess!!!!!!!!!!!! I had taken 2 imodiums too but they didn't help all that much.

Any advice or news for me?

Thanks.

Yes, that's pretty normal. I started on 400mg daily and holy smokes, I was a pooping machine. LOL. Stomach upset was really bad too. I split the dose until my body adjusted. Now I can take it all together. No more poop or tummy trouble. Took about a month to be okay. Taking your dose with a large meal will help too.

Glad you're feeling such an improvement!

Yeppers, very normal. I was one of the few people that could not tolerate it. I was started on 200mg twice a day...tried that for about 2 months, then went to 100mg 2x's a day with still no luck. I tried that for 2 months. Finally moved onto something else. I had several other "annoying" side effects and the medicine was doing making things MUCH worse for me!!

On another note, I have recently started not being able to digest salad very well. If I eat one, i need to be near a bathroom quick! Not quite sure what that is about...maybe something they are putting in the salad to make it last longer???

I started out at 1/2 a 100 mg pill with my supper but my aches and pains were so bad, I bumped it up to 1 100 mg with my supper. I felt sooo much better with the aches, pains and energy. Then after about 4 days, the diarrhea started. After I wrote this I did wonder if the diarrhea was part of this cold virus that I have right now. Husband had it last week and he said one day his stomach was running off a bit. So, maybe it is part of the virus. I sure hope so! I need to be able to take t his drug. I don't have too many choices b/c of the colitis situation with arthritis drugs.

Hi
I'm new here and I was just reading your posts. I was taking 200mg of plaquinel twice a day for 6 years, but have had complications with my eyes so now I am cut back to 200mg per day. I was having alot of trouble with diarrhea and had to depend on taking lomitil. Since I had back anxiety I thought that was the cause until now ready your posts. I find that my stomach is very sensitive when eating certain foods now that never bothered me before, such as ice cream (one of my favorite foods), peanuts, wheat pasta, green peppers, milk, cheese and there is others. Anyone else having problems with certain food? I am just recently off of predisone and I have losengers and a spray for the mouth ulcers, but having difficulty walking due to severe pain in my right hip. I'm kind of doubting that my meds are the right ones for me. I'm taking plaquinel, Azathioprine and Naprox. Has anyone else been on any of these for treating Lupus? Starting to get pretty discouraged!!!!!!

I've been on Plaquenil for 3 years now and I never really had any bowel problems, but it never really did much for pain for me either. So I've always had to take some kind of pain medicine. If I go off Plaquenil for 3 days or more I break out in my original symptom of huge hot welting hives from head to toe and fatigue like I've been hit by a Mack truck. I'm allergic to all NSAID's so I've only been able to take the narcotic pain meds, so I figure that I don't get the runs from the Plaquenil becuase the of the constipating effect of the pain meds it all kinda evens out. That is until they put me on morphine er and I stopped going altogether. Boy, that I just couldn't take. I took the pain over exlax every few days. YUCK!!

LOL.... It seems if you have constipation, you dream of diarrhea, and visa versa! I used to have constipating symptoms with my colitis.

I started back on the plaquenil this weekend. So far, so good and I feel so much better. I hope the effect continues and that it won't give me diarrhea in time. I found out a bug was going around a few weeks ago when I got diarrhea.
