What sort of symptoms do you experience with hot weather and also the sun? Lately since the temps went up I am sweating like a pig. Is this part of it? I may have to move up north! lol.... I live/love to swim these past few summers. I always thought the heat intolerance was due to menopause in the past few years. Will meds make a difference in this at all? Thanks!

I'm being tested for Lupus again but diagnosed with Fibro last Jan. I was having an incredible internal furnace that just wouldn't shut off. I am going through the big M but these were not flashes at all. I swear I've had people almost call 911 for me when my entire face looks so red that it's going to pop. I am on Savella and that made it worse. So.. what happened before the Savella. They put me on Simvastatin and it worked really well but I guess part of this well most of this furnace was due to that. I'm now on Crestor and omg I can feel cold again. Something so simple could have saved me a season or two so check your meds. I did not see that listed as a side effect.

Hi Jean. I sweat like a pig about 5 months out of the year. Many days if I have to go to the store, my hair is wet from the tops of my ears down. My butterfly rash appears, but not as bad a Sillyme describes.

Sillyme I didn't know simvastin causes flushing. I was on lipitor for a few years and switched to simvastin cause it's generic. Since your post I've read a couple of articles on it and I'm going to ask my doc if I can discontinue for a while to see if it helps. Thanks for the great info. Love, Butterflake

When I took a statin like lipotor or zocor, my hot flashes got worse. I no longer take them for other reasons.

i use to sweat just sitting......it was so awful...........during that time i had horrible stomach issues......... bloating, pan, nausea, throwing up, 24hrs a day...........i went looking for something for my stomach, the sweating was just one of many things i was dealing with............

i found lots of info on digestion & hydrochloric acid (HCl) production..........so i tried some one day........it was amazing how it stopped the stomach issues & controlled them........it seems i am achlorhydric.......... but what was wonderful was that the sweating just stopped..........it also helped my body aches........they r still there, but they r not something i even think about now..........

betaine hydrochloride can help the stomach produce HCl, if it's capable..........if not, the real thing is what is necessary............

Yea, I sweat more when my stomach is going to get upset. Sometimes sweating is the first thing that happens as a warning and then later, my stomach cramps start. I don't know why the two are connected somehow. I have reflux, so the HCL wouldn't work for moi. Thanks for the suggestion though. Glad it worked for you!

smhair  That's as close as I could find to a cooking emoticon.  LOl  It's funny becuase I don't really sewat that much I just cook.  I'm kinda like a lobster or crab or something I just turn bright red all over.  Face arms, legs, everything just turns red and I turn a billion degrees with no way of cooling down.  I can come in and take an ice cold shower, get out and I'm still hot.  It takes forever to get my temp back down again.  I stay red until well into the next day.  It's kinda funny to about the shellfish thing, becuase I'm sooooo allergic to them.  My husband ate mussels at a party came over and kissed me without washing his face and my lips started to get numb and tingly, and last night we got Chinese food, order pork egg food young, pretty safe, no shellfish, well, they over did the MSG and must have cooked shellfish in the same pan becuase I had the same lip reaction, throat started to get tight, my tongue strated to swell up, thank God I had liquid Benedryl (it works faster then pills), so I didn't have to make an er trip. But that's a little bit off topic, sorry. about the heat thing, I am a bit different from the rest of you.  Like I said I just cook, and if I cook to long, I get major migraines that for about 2-3 days, but that was last summer.  This summer I am armed!! I have New glasses ordered to help with the glares, and I think I'm going to order the cooling bandanas.  I have major UVA/UVB sunblock 70,  getting a UVA/UVB umbrella, a misting fan, I have both Imitrex and zomig when the bad migraines hit and Topomax to keep them at bay, so hopefully they won't hit at all.  So let's hope this summer will be better then last.  Of course being on MTX and pred and possibly having Lupus means I have no business spending much time in the sun anyway, but just in case I have to be in it a litlle, I 'm ready.   I think.

I can't tolerate the heat either. I always feel worse in the summer than I do in the winter, but lately I have been freezing. Maybe it's my age. Hope you feel better soon. Take care.

I was just re-reading your post Jennifer. Don't forget the wide brim hats; I have 3. I also have a UVA/B shirt, pants and very light jacket. I buy my stuff at www.coolibar.com or www.sungrubbies.com  The UVA/B umbrella also sounds like a good idea. I haven't seen cooling banbanas, but I do have a cooling hat I wear when gardening on my patio. The hat has a section bout 2 inches wide that when wet, expands a bit and cools. I like the hat, but if you get such things take my advice and do not put them in the washer! :) Love, Donna

I am so glad you asked this question as I was just getting ready to ask it. I've had lupus for 2 yrs (probably much longer if truth be told) and this summer all I do is sweat. It pours off my body and drips off my hair. It's so embarrassing. I went through menopause at 39 and am way past hot flashes. But these aren't flashes just continual sweating. I always lived for the summer, sun and swimming but can no longer be in the sun. I'm going to ask my Rheumy when I see him in July. Good luck!

look ofr these things called Miracool cooling bandanas. You'll have to Google it. They are bandanas with these aborbant crystals inside you soak them in water and they puff up. You can wrap them around your head or neck and thy ler your bdy temperature a lot. We had them at college football games and they worked great. I'm ordering some for the trip, I can't afford the UV clothes right now and FIL will get the Umbrella at the golf course in Miami. Thanks for the imput.

I am going to have to get one of those bandannas. I just thought they were a gimmick. We were out in the heat this weekend and lucky for me a breeze came up or we would have missed a good time outside. I wished that we had brought a small ice chest with some washclothes we could soak in ice water to put on our heads and necks. I'll have to try those bandannas, they sound easier than carrying around a cooler.

You might be in perimenopause. I had hot flashes years before I went into menopause especially pre-menstural ones. I started flashhing at 32 and went through menopause at 40. I sometimes wonder if the auto immune stuff made me go through menopause early.

Well when I went through peri-menopause, they didn't know about peri-menopause. They said as long as you have cycles, you are fine. Now we know with perimenopause, you can start having symptoms and it can be up to 10 years before menopause and for me, it was at 32. Around 40, I had some unusual cycles and my PCP kept saying I was too young for menopause. Finally after missing 2 periods, they checked and low and behold, it was menopause. Funny, I went to see a Chinese acupuncturist around that time and he told me it was menopause 2 years before my test went positive! Somehow he knew. I was a little offended at first b/c I was so young and looked young too. LOL....

I have always had problems in the summer, even as a child I would get sick to my stomach and headaches and my skin would turn red red red in a matter of minutes in the sun with sunscreen. Now I spend my summers inside with central air. I can't imagine not having central air in the summer. Maybe we can retire to the desert and the heat will be dry instead of wet. I can't breath in wet heat which is why we will never move that far south.

I love your quote redrose!!!!!!!!! That is really awesome.

This is a total turn around for me. When I was young, we baked in the sun all day long and thought it was wonderful. It is completely the opposite for me now. I am watching the storms and my pain to see if they correlate.

I betterupdate my heat/sun intoleance reply. Yes I do still cook frm the inside ndall that, bu there is a bit more. I apparntly trigered the worst flare yet from chatting with a friend in a parking lot for 15 mins. I broke out in hives fo 4 days, I'm exahuasted, and have the worst joint pain yet. So no more fun in the sun for me at all.

Gosh, that's too bad for 15 minutes in the sun. I hope the flare goes away very soon. The only time I am outside is when I am in my pool which is partially shaded with 100spf and a hat on. Swimming is the one thing that makes me feel better for a while.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm SO grateful I found it! I'm not crazy...yay! ha
I can NOT take the heat. I suffer all year, but these hot southern summers intensify it. I'm not sure if it's from the SLE , some medication I'm on, or a combination of both. Does anyone have an opinion on what causes it? Thank you!
