I am 47 - went to the dr for routine urine tests as thought i might have cystitis - checked urine and because kidney issues run in the family she suggested a routine blood tests - the urine was fine no protein, no infection, but the lupus test came back positive 1:80 homogenous. I am healthy - have no muscle aches, no rashes, no fatigue, no family history of any AI diseases - so am hysterical with worry! Dr referred me to a nephrologist - is that right - does that mean she suspects kidney stuff and the ANA is irrelevant. Help all this is new to me I had never even heard of lupus.

Hi Steview. Positive ANAs without illness are found in 5% of the general population. You have a low ANA titer which also indicates you may not have an autoimmune disease. I hope your visit to the nephrologist goes well! Love, Butterflake

Thanks so much for the response, i have been googling like crazy to get information on it and the more i look the more confusing it seems. The ANA of 1:80 according to lots of uk lupus sites indicates a negative to the disease so am hoping all will be okay, just have more dreaded blood tests and agonising waiting for results to get through. Thanks once again.

1:80 is considered positive, but an ANA test is NOT a "lupus test" as you say. A positive ANA can mean a plethora of things, including very minor things like mild Raynaud's phenomenon (which all the women in my family have), or even nothing at all. What it does NOT mean without any other symptoms is that you have lupus! In order to be diagnosed with lupus, you must have many other symptoms of lupus. A positive ANA just means it's likely you have one of very many autoimmune diseases.

Did they give a pattern, like nucleolar or speckled, etc? and reflex it for other autoantibodies? If you have no other autoantibodies, a diagnosis of lupus is extremely unlikely, don't worry! :)

Thanks for that, my pattern was homogenous, I saw the nephrologist on Friday who said I have rbc's in my urine test and sent me for an ultrasound test of the kidneys etc and a chest x-ray looking for sarcoidosis, the radiologist said he couldn't see anything dodgy on either. I had loads of blood tests taken and have to wait for them to come back to get an idea of what is going on, the neph. wants to eliminate all the horrible things first so am hoping it is just some horrible infection! Thank you for your kind advice - I am trying really hard not to panic.

Have had results of blood tests, had dsna and loads of others all normal, all scans normal, nephrologist did loads of kidney function tests and i have no symptoms of anything dodgy, so has ruled out any lupus or any AI disease, thank goodness! Still got microscopic blood in urine, so being sent over to a urologist to check me out. Thanks for your posts - and hopefully this may help others who find themselves with an ANA positive, it really doesn't mean you have lupus of any AI disease - I am proof. Best wishes to you all.
