Hello everyone,

I’ve been off and on here with questions and have always got good feedback. I am back frustrated as hell so here goes my ranting... I have had my symptoms for a year and under a specialist care since October on 2009. My symptoms are swollen joints with pain stiff joints,  brain fog, memory problems lack of concentration, I am 32 and not able to multi task like I used to... I have had vasculitis and stomach problems as well. Lots of other symptoms but these are the ones that bother me the most. I also have some symptoms of fibromyalgia doc said the memory and brain fog is part of that and pins and needle pain in my legs.  I’m taking plaqunil, trazadone, vit D, Aspirin, melatonin… vicodin and codine for pain as needed. I’ve just started the trazadone 2 months ago because I was taking a lot of pain pills due to a hurt shoulder and was having sleeping problems. Trazadone was working well, my body got a good reboot every night and I even canceled my monthly doc apt.. Other than a bit of pain here and there I felt almost normal again. Then last week I started having problems sleeping again.... I was having to take 5 mgs of melatonin on top of the trazadone... not getting to actually sleep till 2 AM now my leg pain is back with a vengeance and I’m back on pain pills.

I am so frustrated as quickly as the meds seem to be helping day by day it seems to be going back to its worst. I know others have much worse pain and internal probs. but any pain that doesn’t go away becomes worse and harder to deal on a day to day basis. I don’t know what is considered a flare and what I can do to help other then taking more meds and running back to my docs.. I owe everyone money and will only do that as a last resort... I just need some advice…

Are you taking anything for inflammation? Usually it's inflammation that causes swollen joints, pain and neuropathy (pins & needles). I didn't see any Ibuprofen or Prednisone in your med list, that's usually what rheumy's use for inflammation before they load you up with pain medication. Prednisone can also help with brain fog & concentration.

Generally they say you can tell the different between lupus and fibro because lupus responds well to prednisone, but fibro gets worse with prednisone. No doctor can just "decide" which of those diseases is primary for you when you have overlapping symptoms...

Hope you feel better soon

Hi Mkayla,

When I flare the only thing that helps is prednisone....I HATE prednisone because of the weight gain and other symptoms but it's the only thing that can bring a flare under control for me. I'm on plaquenil and Imuran too.

Sending prayers and ((((((hugs))))))

I agree with Lynnwood, it sounds like you may need an anti inflammatory (NSAIDS) in the form of an prescription. This would be something you would take daily, there are literally hundreds out there to choose from. Hopefully your doctor can pick the right one for you the first time but if it doesn't work get him to pick another one. This will really help with your joint pain. I have a lot of joint pain and on Plaquenil which helps some, also on an NSAIDS which helps some too, but I can certainly tell if I skip ONE of them.

I hope you find relief soon! Take care
