She has had a terrible time breathing the past few days. Seems over the past  couple of weeksshe put on 40 lbs. Her heart rate is through the roof and her o2 stats are in the basement. She went in last night. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. She does as her cell phone with her but I think until they can dump some of this fluid it's going to be hard for her to talk so if you call her be mindful she needs to be careful. I know first hand when you  can breath trying to talk on the phone is really hard.
Love ya Barb I'm glad you decided to go get help. Please don't wait so long next time. I know why you did but just remember you need help during these times because you can't kick it by yourself
talk to you later today
Godd bless

Hi everyone, I just got off the phone with Barb. She has her laptop with her so she is getting your posts and I know she really appreciates it. No sign of her coming home. Which I am thankful for she was so sick last week. Doc says she has to have 2 units of blood. (transfusions) today. She sounds like she is breathing a little better but she still has a long ways to go. I'm sure she will post herself when she feels up to it. I guess they are keeping the lasix flowing in shots and iv's. I know she doesn't want to be there but it's the best place for her right now.
So that's about it for now. I gotta get ready for church. Take care everyone. I hope you have a painfree sunday

Hello everyone,

Barb asked me to post an update from her.

The Doctors did a couple of blood cultures and found something growing in her blood, plus her white blood count went up. After snooping around some more, they've discovered she has a bacterial infection in her heart, which they believe has originated from her port. (Some of you may recall that she's had a history of problems with her ports, but that it's impossible to get a blood draw from her without one.)

They are currently doing more tests to discover the extent of what's going on with the heart, possibly including sending a scope down behind the heart to look at it from that side. They are also treating the port, but are guessing that unless things change a lot in the next 3 days that they'll end up pulling the port out again. She's going to need IV antibiotics for two weeks -- but if they pull the port out they'll give her a PIC line and have said she can give herself the antibiotics thru that at home.

Currently they think she might be able to go home Monday, but meanwhile she is disappointed as she was hoping to get home today.

I'll let you know if I find out more,

Hi Everyone:

Thanks for your kind words and support. I'm still in the hospital and most likely will be until Monday. Tomorrow I'll be going to the OR to have a transesophageal echocariogram to determine how much bacteria has attached itself to my heart valves. They determined the type of infection I have is a staff infection. I'll have to be on IV antibiotics 2 to 3 times per days for the next 2-6 weeks. That will depend on what they see tomorrow.

On top of all this I noticed my left side of my breast was hurting and warm. My husband looked at it and said it looks like you've got blisters there. Well long story short, I've got a case of shingles on top of my staph infection. When it rains it pours. Please keep the positive energy and prayers coming I certainly need them.

Hope that you all are feeling as well as you possibly can. Thanks for being there as you always are for me. Have a good evening all.

Hugs,
Barbara

Barb, good luck on the tests and so sorry to hear about the shingles- my grandma got them once for 9 months back when I was a kid before they had any antivirals to treat it. I really hope you get good news monday you deserve it.

I was able to touch base with Barbara this morning, and wanted to give you guys a quick update.

The scope behind the heart showed low levels of bacteria there, and her most recent blood tests show that the evil bugs are about gone -- which means possibility of an earlier hospital release!

However, the port is still a problem, so they'll have to replace it with a PIC line (a catheter into a vein on the forearm). With the PIC line she can continue the IV antibiotics at home.

She didn't mention the shingles so I'm hoping they are getting Better!

If you're spiritual in a way that involves praying, it's important to Barb and her family she's released from the hospital for July 8th thru 11th! Energy towards that goal is appreciated!

Cheers,

(((Barb)))),
Sorry, I haven't talked to you in the last couple of days.....I didn't know you had shingles on top of everything else sweetie.

I'm glad to hear your infection levels have gone down and I hope they have gotten the PIC line in with no problems.

You are in my thoughts and prayers....my friend.

Love you, Babs

Hi Barb. I'm so glad the docs are making progress towards that staph infection. It can be a very nasty bug resistant to lots of antibiotics. Shingles, ports and pic lines- whew! I want to say I'm sorry, but I think you need all the positive energy I can muster. I'll pray and concentrate for July 8 release. Try to rest Sweetie. Love ya, Donna

Today's Report:

They went ahead and replaced Barbara's port -- new location, new vein, new port! So as soon as they can get things scheduled she can go home & do her own IV antibiotics!

Yay!

Dear Barb,
Hugs and wishing I could send you something to help you feel better.... hmmnnm, my new little puppy Alice Mary, a 5 month old crapzhu poo mutt would like to try, she just rolled in and ate something REALLY NASTY and thought she didn't need an emergency bath at all! But she doesn't have any manners yet.... Just had a taste of blue raspberry flavored vodka.. maybe that. (I don't often drink and thought I could REALLY develop a fondness for this stuff). How about a comforter made out of clouds??, them hospital sheets are like sandpaper, it might take me awhile to collect enough of them, though.........just know that where you are is where you need to be today. I know what it is to try and wait out being sick until I feel better.....and then being mad because I don't. I did the home IV antibiotic deal, too, and aren't those ports a blessing in a nasty disquise? Tried to faint twice while they put mine in, and it's tough to pass out while you are laying with your head tipped down! tongue and I really, really, wanted to. (pass out that is). I had staph, too, anerobic and aerobic staph sachryliticus, and strep, and needed 3 different antibiotics. Try and keep your nutrition up, the antibiotics will take a toll on your poor tummy. I found it helped to eat 4-6 snacks to keep something in my stomach so I didn't feel so queezy, (how do you speel queezy??) You have to take one day at a time, tomorrow will worry about itself...tomorrow.

Barb I hope you get home by the 8th and can stay there for a good long while. I am so sorry you had to have your port replaced but at least they caught it before it killed you, which is the bright side to this. I had IV antibiotics once but in the hospital. Never had them at home. I cannot imagine it is fun. I wish I could do more. I have to spend a week or two in the hospital being observed beginning Aug 2nd not something I want to do but necessary. I hate hospital beds and IVs, I think we all do. I really hope you get home soon.
