I have no clue, but wanted to wish safe travels to you,and come home safe.God bless.x0 crystal

Carol,

I don't want to scare you here but swelling like that can sometimes indicate kidney involvement. Definitely mention this to your doctor tomorrow, be sure to make a list or you may forget! Let us know how it goes! Hugs and love

Stacie,
I am concerned about the swelling thing HUGE! My daughter has had swelling in her ankles ,to the point she hides it,she doesn't want to go in due to fear.I have lupus,my mom has secondary progressive MS.She is scared, but I need to tell her that the swelling she gets isn't normal, her ankle bone disappears, and it comes and goes,I keep bugging her''show me your ankles'',and even if it drives her around a bend she clearly needs to be checked. Thank you for giving me the information,it is appreciated.God bless crystal

As soon as I read you were having swelling in your legs and then on your other post that you had gained 10 pounds in a week, I thought of kidney problems. I'm really glad you are seeing the doctor tomorrow and he had better do something, or he'll get some angry e-mails from us (lol).

Take care and let us know how the appointment goes when you are feeling up to it.

Crystal, I would go ahead and have your daughter checked by a specialist (nephrologist). Kidney problems and / or damage can be VERY silent!! I recently had a scare and had a couple of 24 hour urine test (one with protein) and a kidney ultrasound, all is well for now but my docs are keeping a very close eye on things especially because of lupus and polycystic kidneys that runs in my family. How old is your daughter? Please ease your mind and have her checked even if you don't tell her what kind of doctor you are taking her to.

Carol, I am glad your rheumy appt is right when this swelling is happening. I think it would be enough to grab their attention and make them run further tests! Take care and let us know what the doc says.

See a nephrologist.  Your edema is probably caused by kidney involvment.  Diet or diruretics is not enough.  Proteinuria is often the cause....your kidneys filtering protein out of your blood causing the edema.  This is a potentially serious condition that is normally treated with an ace inhibitor like lisinopril.

While treatable it is nothing to delay treating as it indicates possible kidney damage.

Stacie, she is 17 and this is something she wants to ignore,I don't think it is something to ignore, thank you for the advice,I had no idea our kidneys can do that silent thing,I thought anything involving the kidneys was obvious and painful-my youngest son was born with an obstruction to his left kidney, they are waiting to see if he requires surgery ,he seems to be healthy, and has no fevers, etc,we had to really watch when he was younger,so far so good. They never told us what the obstruction was.,but said he may grow and the ''obstruction'' may no longer present a problem-he's 3. crystal

whenever i had swollen ankles it was one of two things: if it was both ankles i was going into a flare and i have kidney involvement so my kidneys would not get rid of all the waste that they were suppose to. if it was just my left ankle that was swollen it was from the avn in my knee and i knew to just elevate and it would go away and it usually didn't come back either.
Hugs and prayers,
Suzanne
