This cold I have has gotten quite bad within a short period of time.  Usually when I get a cold, it's mostly congestion and maybe a sore throat.  This time I still have the congestion, but I feel like this cold has settled into my chest already.  I highly doubt that it has gotten to the point of being pneumonia yet, but I was wondering how you know if it might be pneumonia - I know that several of you have had it and I was hoping you could tell me some symptoms.  I haven't had pneumonia since I was a very little kid so I don't remember how it feels.  Right now it feels like there is a weight on my chest and it hurts pretty bad when I cough.  My guess is that I will be calling the doctors office Monday morning for an appointment.  I'm going to try that remedy that emmi told Carol about with the Vicks rub.

Morning Hippi,

Sorry that cold is taking a hold on you.
Have you checked for a fever yet? If you are getting a respiratory infection, you will have chills and fever. #2, the tightness and heaviness in your chest could be the congestion, but if you are feeling pain or discomfort in your sides, or if you are getting short of breath, I would call the doc or go to the ER, but only if you have a fever.
I hope it isnt an infection, and I hope that maybe your cold is like the one I just got over, (and some other family members) it progressed quick..and left quick!!

Healing hugs to you

Oh no Hippi,
I sure hope this doesn't turn into pneumonia. Our office has admitted several people this week with severe lung infections and pneumonia. Most of them had fevers, a very rattling cough, nausea, dehydration, and extreme weakness. They all looked very pale. I think most of them let it get too far before coming in. Please stay on top of this and go to the ER if it gets any worse instead of waiting till monday.
It has been awhile since I had pneumonia, but I had the same systems as the ones I listed above. Take care rest, drink lots of fluids and keep us updated. I will be praying for you!

I'm so sorry about your cold, Hippi. I have one too and it's getting worse every day. Thank goodness it's not in my chest. The last time I had pneumonia it was much as Diane described. Achy, fever, tightness in my chest, and localized chest pain. Since your immune system is depressed, you have to be extra careful. My cold has caused me to flare and I feel awful, so I'm finding people to drive my hubby around so I can sit here, curled up in a blanket, drinking hot tea and resting. Hopefully you can do the same. My hubby insisted that I suck on zinc cold drop lozenges. Don't know if they'll help or not, but they won't hurt.

We're taking about the same dose of prednisone. When my doc put me on CellCept she told me to to be around anyone who had an inkling of a cold, flu, etc. and not to be around small children at all. Of course I ignored her advice when it comes to my granddaughters, but my stepdaughter knows not to bring them over if they have anything at all.

Thank goodness my hubby understands that my immune system has trouble fighting off anything, so he's very supportive. I'll bet yours is too. This is truly family disease, isn't it.

Babs is so right.....don't wait till Monday if it gets worse. If you go to the ER they might be able to give you something so it won't go into pneumonia, if it hasn't already.

Take care Hippi. Let's drink a cup of hot tea together.

Hi hippi, actually it can be hard to tell. I've had it and other than feeling tired I didn't even have a cough. Than ran xrays and there is was. Other times I couldn't catch my breath the pain was in my back not my chest. If you are coughing up anything green or yellow that indicates an infection of some type. With your immune system surpressed it isn't a big jump from the cold/flu to a lung infection. With my lungs I have to get a flu shot every year and a pnemonia shot every 3 years. You should not mess around with this. You probably should get an x ray. When you get pnemonia it scars your lungs and makes it more seceptible to further infections.

I hope you find out and get to feeling better soon
love ya

Hi Hippi, oh no. I hope that you're not getting pneumonia or pluerisy. If you get worse, like Babs said. you should go to the e.r. and not wait for Monday. I'm with Carol too, on getting an xray taken. I had pneumonia alot in my childhood and bronchitis. I seems like for the last 7yrs. or so, I've been getting an upper res. infection that turns into bronchitis that goes into pneumonia. I remember a fever of more than 101, yellow/green flem, difficulty in breathing, extreme tiredness, more muscle and joint aches than usual. I remember a very heavy feeling in my chest. Coughing hurt. Breathing hurt. I get pluerisy alot too. I get extreme pain when I breathe, temp, I feel as though someone is standing on my chest. Lupies are prone to pluerisy. If I get a dx of pluerisy, they usually increase the prednisone, my pcp has to call my rheumie, and then I have to see him too. Lung"things" can turn on us lupies fast...we have to be very careful about watching symptoms and not letting things go. My new rheumie said that he wants me to go to his hospital e.r. and he will be called.

Hippi, I hope that you feel better fast and find out quickly what you have. ((((((gentle hugs )))))) Cecelia

Thanks for the support and the information. I went back to bed this morning and slept for 5 more hours. I have been running a low grade fever (about 99.5) and have sore, swollen glands. I hadn't thought about pleurisy, but that's a possibility too. Diane, hopefully my cold will be like yours and not hang around too long.

Pat, I hope you haven't gotten too run down and that your cold doesn't get worse too. Like you said it's hard to stay away from small kids when you have them or when you have grandkids around. My daughter got a cold the same time I did, but hers isn't too bad yet.

We got our humidifier out and I'll take some nyquil tonight. I will go to the ER if I get extremely sick or get a high fever. Most likely I'll try to see my doctor on Monday unless I'm quite a bit better - I don't want to mess around and let this get too bad.

Thanks for the hugs and prayers.

Hi Hippi:

(((((hugs))))) sweetie I'm so sorry to hear that you're so sick. I don't want to alarm you and be the bearer of bad news, but I would strongly recommend that you go into the ER in the morning. I've had pneumonia many times over that past 3 years. I had 4 cases of it last winter and 2 of those times, I didn't run a fever at all with it. Having a fever isn't always necessary when having pneumonia. My friend Cindy had it in 1997 and only had chest pain and a cough. She had me take her to an urgent care clinic and the x-ray showed pneumonia.

Since you're running a low grade temp and you are immuno suppressed, I strongly recommend you be seen tomorrow. I'm praying that you don't have pneumonia and that with a some antibiotics you'll be feeling good real soon. Please post when you can and let us know how you're doing. I'm praying for you and I hope that you're able to rest tonight.

Lots of hugs and love to you,

Barbara

Hippi,
I hope you are feeling a bit better this morning and were able to get a good nights sleep. Take care, rest, and keep drinking plenty of fluids. Hopefully, that fever will stay down. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Things are about the same this morning, so at least it's not any worse. I haven't taken my temp yet, but I don't feel like I have a fever right now. My chest isn't as bad right now, so that's good, but the congestion is pretty rotten to the point where I might have a sinus infection. Barb, I definitely agree that since I am immuno suppressed that I should get checked. I'm planning to call my doctor in the morning to to get everything checked out. Babs, thanks for the reminder about fluids - I need a constant reminder of that, especially when I am sick or flaring.

We don't have much planned today, so I'll be a couch (or bed) potato along with everyone else on here who is having a rough time with illness and flares (I think there are quite a few of us).

(((((((hippi)))))))), I'm so gratful you aren't worse but yes the more fluids you drink the thinner all the crap in your lungs is and the easier it is to cough it up. I'm glad you are going to get into your doctor. this kind of stuff can get real bad real fast. This coming from the queen of the lung disease.

God bless and get lots of rest.
