First off, I want to apologize if this topic was discussed lately... you know how the mind is eyes

I have my well woman exam tomorrow (BAH!!) and I was going to discuss my CTD diagnosis with my gyn.  I am currently on Nuvaring for a couple of years now, which is a form of birth control that disperses low dose hormones (progestin & estrogen) um err directly to where it needs to go, um ya ok.  I like it so much better than the pill because I don't swallow a pill and it doesn't cause GI upset for me but there are the same risks because of the hormones to the bloodstream which I'm thinking isn't good because of blood clot/stroke risks?

I abolutely need to be on some kind of birth control however I don't know what is the best option and I feel that I probably need to change it.  What do you guys do for b.c.?

Des, I have read that any birth control with hormones can possibly make lupus symptoms worse or possibly cause flares. I know there's not much out there that doesn't contain hormones, but I think there may be an IUD that doesn't contain hormones. After I got really sick, I knew it would be too hard on my body to have any more kids so my husband got a vasectomy, so that is how we solved our birth control problem. Before that we used condoms, but they are a real pain in the rear.

Good luck at your appointment and I hop you find some BC that will work well for you.

Take care

Thanks hippi... I will ask about the IUD, there is one on the market called Mirena (sp?) that I may ask her about. Yeah, I don't think that I want to take any chances with the hormones because I have heard the same thing as you. We can't do condoms because even though I don't have an allergy to latex, it does cause irritation for me plus you can throw the whole spontanaity out the window. I did ask my hubby once about possibly having a vasectomy and he just lost all color in his face lol. I guess I could get a tubal but I'm worried about surgery putting too much stress on my body (especially elective). Thanks for the suggestion, IUD may be the way to go.

My doc wanted to give me the IUD Mirena and I said NO WAY. It is a plastic IUD that bounces around your uterice and gives a low dose of progesterone only. The progesterone level is an equivalent to the Mini Pill which is only 85% effective. 50% of women get pregnant the second year according to the pamphlet. Mirena in Lupus patients can cause inflammation and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. My rheumy advised against Mirena. I am on the Mini Pill (Gyno said no more estrogen/progesterone BC pills due to the Lupus Dx) and it's not working for me. I have been spotting for 5 months. The Mini Pill can cause constant spotting. So, I am having a Uterine Ablation and if that doesn't stop the spotting then I finally get my hysterectomy. Oh and I will have a tubaligation with the Ablation. My rheumy says that those are the safest options. I will be glad when it's all over. I have had enough periods for a life time.

Thanks for the heads up on the Mirena IUD Kitty. I'm just really scared of the thought of inserting the traditional copper IUD, I hear it is not a pleasant experience. I guess I will just see what she has to say and ask her to give me my options. Hopefully she has experience with this (maybe she has other Lupus patients). I'll let you all know how it goes.

Take Care

What about the shot? The one you take every 90 days? It should wont cause GI upset.

I take a low-dose BC pill. I used to get very nauseous so they put me on this one, Kariva is the generic. I think the brand name is Mircette? It also has a low dose week that you take during your period so you do not get a drop in hormones as you do with most pills. That may be a good choice for you too.
