Hi guys.  I am so very new to all of this, and need some direction here....
For the fifth time since Easter, I have been itching from head to toe, not a little irritating itch, but an all over awful itch, one of those if you scrath you cant get to it.  It very prickly and is driving me NUts!!  Each time it happens I try to figure out what I have eaten of come in contact with, but I am beginning to think this is not an allergy, but a systemic thing.

That being said, I went to the ER last night at 2:00.  Thank goodness the sweet doctor was on that shift (I have gotten to know all of them, haha).  He gave me a Medrol injection and did some blood work.  My WBC count came back at 17.1, way out of range.  I have no apparent signs of infection, and I dont feel sick, except for the itching and fatigue I always have.  My temp was 99.0, which is high for me.  I run a 97.1 usually.  He also found some swollen lymph nodes under my chin.  I didnt know they were there, because they are not painful.  He wants me to follow up with my PCP tomorrow, and possibly see a hematologist.

Ok, guys....  help me understand this.  I have been online since I got home looking into this, but I cant find anything that tells me if this could be the Lupus flaring, or some kind of Hodgkins?  This is very scary.  Plus, remember that I am in between Rheumy's right now, so I cant call him yet.

I know you guys can explain this to me, and help me to calm down and not worry so much.  Its just that I have have four children I am raising alone right now, and I have to be here for them.

Thank you so much!!

Victoria,

I have never had itching. Although I have had the swollen lymph nodes (all over) and the fatigue and low grade temp.

Sometimes I think we scare ourselves silly needlessly by trying to diagnose ourselves via the internet. I am the WORST. I have no patience for ...patience! I want to know whats wrong and I want to know NOW! :-)

But there is a good chance that your not going to know whats going on until they do further testing. And even then, if your like me... they might not know. For right now, until you see your doc. Just try not to over focus on it. Do life the best you can while feeling down.

I did notice that you mentioned in one of your posts that you take Darvocet. I know that it can cause itching for some people. Any narcotic can. Do you seem to notice that it makes the itching worse? Also, if it were from the narcotics, if you take a benadryl it will help somewhat. Have you tried taking benadryl to see if it helps the itching?

Will be sending non itchy thoughts your way,
Darlene

Thanks Darlene, for the encouragement.

I havent taken the Darvocet in probably a month and no other meds recently besides my Neurontin. (I need to edit my signature). I have been taking 2- 10 mg Zyrtec, 6 Benadryl and a 100mg Neurontin for the itching. Also, I got a Medrol injection this morning..... none of it has helped. Honestly this is absolutely unbearable. I have never had anything like this, never. It sure as heck stumped the ER doc... what in the world can this be?

Hi there,

I see your thread says you were starting Plaq in February well that in itself could be causing your itchiness as that is what mine was. I was so itchy even behind my eyes and in my ears. I stopped taking the generic brand of plaq for a week and no itching. I refilled my perscription with the branded version of plaq on May 1st as my pharmacist said "a lot of people can develop allergies to the fillers companies use in generic drugs but they do nothing about as they assume the side affects are actually their illness not the drugs"  So I started on the branded everything was fine for weeks then yesterday bang itchy again waiting to see the rheumy tomorrow as I think I am allergic to plaq and might need mtx instead.

hope that helps

Angela

Hi Angela!

I only took the Plaq for a week in Feb, then stopped it because of problems with my pancreas.  I edited my profile, I'm sorry it misled you. sad    Right now the only drugs I take are Darvocet (occasionally), Neurontin (100mg at night) and Tylenol or Advil. then Benadryl as needed.  I have been successful at weaning myself off most of the meds, and have experienced somewhat of a remission, until now.  What really irritates me, besides the itching, is the fact that I took a Medrol injection, and it did nothing for this itching.  Now I have to deal with headaches, insomnia, and weight gain for a while.  Ugh.

Hi victoria, I'm always at a loss for what all the lab results mean. Please don't freak yourself out. I did that last month and boy it was so not worth it! itchy scratching feeling could be anything. from nerves to a reaction to somthing. to dry skin.
I hope you find somthing to make you comfortable. I hate that itchy feeling. I get it from codeine. Hopfully you can get some answers tomorrow. I imagine you pcp will want to run their own tests.
Let us know how it goes

Hi Victoria, please try not to worry too much about the high wbc. I had a wbc in the 20's for months, and it was put down to some hidden infection which never was found. Even now it's still high at 14. I don't know about the itching though. Maybe if the haematologist sees you he will be able to help. I know certain infections can cause a very high wbc, but I also know it's a big concern also. Take care and let me know how you get on. x x

Hi Victoria,

Were you in the sun, even if overcast, by any chance? That can cause a prickly feeling itchy rash. It can drive you nuts! Just a thought. Hope this passes for you soon. I know first hand how horribly crazy this makes you feel.
