I've isolated a group of muscles in the left middle side of my back that are absolutely hurting like the dickens. The pain wraps around from the back to the front where it joins with my left breast. My hubby and masseuse are convinced that a rib head popped out of place which in turns causes the muscles to spasm. This is all new to me. When the masseusse first touched the area she recoiled and told me that it's very hot and swollen. No kidding. I wish she could have felt how hot and hot swollen it felt from the inside! Earlier that day I had been on my way to the er to have my heart checked out, and of course now I'm glad I didn't go.

I'm told I need to see a chiropractor for an adjustment, but I'm afraid that even if I popped a handfull of pain killer's beforehand, I'd be scared to death to let anyone touch this area, much less adjust my spine an "pop" the rib back in place. I may just have to suck it up. I may try other treatments first.

Have any of you had this problem? I don't think it's associated with lupus but I do wonder if our dear friend skull skull prednisone skull skull causes this to be more of a problem than it would be otherwise. I've already had two stress fractures on my feet.

I've been taking pain killers and muscle relaxants so this post may be somewhat incoherent. It's also the reason why I haven't done any research on the web. My mind is full of mush. And I do admit to being frustrated to the max by all of this.

I haven't been posting much, but I have read that Babs had her tube removed and that some of you have talked to her. If anyone writes to her tonight please send her my love.

And here's wishing everyone a happy Father's Day.

Love,

Pat

Hi Patty, You need to get it checked out. Pred. can indeed cause you to break bones even rolling over in bed if you have oteoporosis. I broke two ribs in my 8th rib in the left side of my back. OUCH I couldn't even breath. or sneeze or cough or even when I got out of bed I had to roll over on my belly and scoot to the side until my toes would touch the ground. The doctor did take her hands and put one hand on one side and one on the other and push my ribs together. Every one in town must of heard me scream. Sadly there isn't much they can do for them. Some of them put a ace bandage thing around them and some don't. You need to get it checked out either way. You could puncture a lung or somthing with a rib or if it's somthing else they can help you out.

Let us know

love ya

Oh Pat, that sounds terribly painful. I didn't even think about the prednisone causing the problem with your rib, but that makes sense. Just another wonderful side effect of prednisone. I really hope you go in and get it checked out, if not today, then tomorrow. Carol brought up a good point about the possibility of puncturing a lung. Nothing can be simple can it?

You'll be in my thoughts and I'll be praying you get some relief soon.

Love and hugs

See a doctor!!!! Hot and swollen needs more than a chiropractor, and I've seen chiropractors on & off since the 60's.

Thanks Hippi, Carol, Babs and Lynnwood for your support. I'm going to call my doctor in the morning. I've been sleeping most of the weeked because of the effects of pain meds and muscle relaxants. Alternating hot baths and an ice pack help a little, but I'm going to leave it up to the doctor to diagnose the problem.

Thank goodness my hubby's kids spent time with him today because I have totally neglected Father's Day. I hope you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable weekend. Hasta manana.

Love,

Pat

Pat, I hope you can get into your doctor tomorrow.  I agree with the others that "hot and swollen" needs to be checked out.  I've never had what you are describing and it truly does sound painful.

I hope you feel better soon.  Let us know what you find out after you go to the doctor.

Thanks again to all of you. I'm sure this is nothing serious and I think it's already better. I've been babying it all weekend - hot baths and ice plus lots of meds to relax the muscles and help with the pain. And my hubby showed me how to do some light exercises standing in front of a wall or corner and I've been doing them regularly. I need to stop coming up with excuses to not exercise. :)

Thanks for asking about my back and side. I'm taking so much to kill the pain that I had actually forgotten about this post. I did call my PCP's nurse Monday morning and she gave me an appointment for Thursday morning. She's a lot more concerned about the cluster of swollen lymph nodes than she is the popped rib head because of the meds I'm on. There is definitely something wrong going on and I know I'm in good hands. In my heart of hearts I believe that the pain is coming from muscle spasms. I'm ready for this pain to go away so I can get back to wallowing in my lupus pity party. One thing at a time please.

You are truly special friends and I appreciate each and every one of you.

Love,

Pat
