I know that sounds kind of funny but trust me it hurts. I havn't changed any of my meds but my doctor did increase my effexor(anti-d) strength from 75mg to 150mg. and I have never had any problems taking generic plaq. but the ones they gave me this time are bone shaped instead of round. I get them through meds by mail thru the v.a. so I have to take what I can get.
Anyway it's just been this past week that I have had the changes in meds. I did notice right off the bat a burning in my esophagas that would last for several hours after the effexor. Now the past couple of night I have laid awake for hours suffering from the worst gas! I mean I expell it but it just continues for hours and it hurts! It hurts all theway up my back into my shoulder and neck. So painful it takes my breath away. It reminds me of when I had gallbladder attacks. (they took that out though). Anyway I really don't want to change my meds because they seem to be helping but I have to get some releif from this. Does anyone else have this problem? and what do you do for it?

Thanks
love

Hi Carol,

Gas and ongoing IBS are listed side effects of effexor. I'd call my pharmacist or my doctor and ask about it, and whether or not these side effects will go away. What you're going through sounds awful Carol, and you have enough aches and pains without having to add any more. But since you started a different kind of plaquenil at the same time, I really would check with a reputable pharmacist to find out what's going on. I hope someone can help you.

Have a dry week! And I really hope you start feeling better.

Carol, you are right about how painful gas can be - I don't think a lot of people realize it. I'm not familiar with some of the meds on your list, but I'm wondering if something like prevacid or prilosec would help with the burning you get and help some with stomach upset. I don't know that they help much with gas though.

I hope this doesn't last too long and that your body adjusts to the increase in effexor.

Take care

Thanks Pat and Hippi, I will speak to the pharmacist about it. Pat I had no idea that those were side effects from effexor. the gas is bad enough but it I get IBS too it would so not be worth taking! Good grief! Good news it's not raining today or yesterday. I didn't wear my o2 at all during the day yesterday because it wasn't humid. yeah Now a few more days like that would be wonderful. I hate being hooked to a machine everywhere I go. It just ain't natural!

Love ya all

Hi Carol--
I'm allergic to effexor and have liver problems and gas and gi problems can be a sign that it might be effecting your liver adversely. The pharm companies and doctors don't feel that some liver damage outweighs the benefits of the drug, but in some cases they do. Effexor is hard to metabolize. My reactions start with gi problems, gas, diarrhea and within two months I have hives. Just wanted to warn you you might be working up to a bad reaction and that maybe you might want to consider having your liver levels checked. Gas is the main sign of liver problems--its a farty kind of thing.:)

Thanks for info Marji, I havn't even taken it today. I thought maybe it wouldn't bother me so much if I take it just before I fall asleep. Which won't solve th issue of a liver problem. I will address it with my doctor. Thanks again

The hours of gas pain and bloating and the gas bubbling around in your gut and the burning esophagus are all too familiar to me and I am sorry you are experiencing it as well.  I have been taking Zantac (Ranitidine) for years for the burning esophagus and I take over the counter Gas-X for the gas pains.  I know it is an embarrassing thing to talk about but it happens.  At least you are passing the gas.  I'd say if you weren't then it would be worrisome.  I also take meds that flare my IBS.  Have you ever been diagnosed with that cause a lot of the meds (especially the Effexor) can make these symptoms worse.  I would say after this long with no relief, and if you have tried some over the counter gas relieving things, it may be time to talk to your doctor.  The Gas-X is only a temporary stop gap.  Plus, before you take it or anything containing simethicone (like Tums) check with your pharmacist because with a lot of meds you CANNOT take Tums or things like that.  I hope this helps some.  And also some meds can cause that embarrassing symptom of "constipation" and that can cause a lot of bloating and bad gas pains and such as well.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Diane, No I have never been diagnoised with IBS, thank God! never want to either. I am sorry you have to deal with it. I did to really set down and cross reference all my meds. So I know what I can and can't take OTC. It sounds like effexor is pretty bad. I've been on it for 3 years without problems at 75mg. I would go back to that but I just got sent a 3 months supply of 150mg caps. I know some of my meds mention not to take tums within 4 hours of taking my meds but I can't remeber which ones it was.

Thanks for the info. I hope you get some rest tonight with the xanax!
love ya

Try the last link in my signature (blue links at end) for a great website that helps w/drug interactions -- you can have it save your regular meds & then add OTC things you are considering to see if there will be a problem or not. I use it a lot!

Carol, I hope you're feeling better tonight!!!! The only rain we had today -- and it was a downpour -- was when I walked out to the parking lot of the grocery store with a cart full of groceries. As soon as I got home it stopped.

I hope it's been dry up your way so that you don't have to use your oxygen. Sleep tight.

Carol, Good for you! It sometimes takes trial and error, doesn't it. I'm so glad you got a good night's sleep. It's raining here today, but a nice steady gentle rain. I have the windows open so I can listen to it. A great day to stay in with a pot of hot coffee and all you friends. I hope the weather doesn't make you feel worse. Keep up the good work with the effexor

Love,

Pat
