Hi...first visit to this site. I have sle ....also lupus nephritis (proliferative glomuero..something..something!!!) I have suffer off and on with large amounts of blood and spilling protien in urine. Mine is due to extensive kidney damage from lupus.

I've had several biopsies and have to do 24 hour urines every so often to calculate the amounts of blood and protien.

I've also had several joint replacements due to damage from prednisone use. Anyone else had to go through several replacements? I've had 8 hips and 5 wrist and so far have not anyone who has had to go through so many and am wondering .....what the heck happened with me and the prednisone!!!

gypsygal,

Hi! Welcome to the forum. I also have focal proliferative mesangiopathic glomerulonephritis secondary to lupus. I have chronic hematuria and proteinuria also. I have done massive doses of prednisone but have not had to have joint replacement. I have never heard of anyone having that many joint replacements! I know this has been a nightmare for you. Have you had infections that have caused them to have to redo the replacements?
God Bless,
Judi

Could you describe "focal proliferative mesangiopathic glomerulonephritis" in English?

I have no idea what that is and unfortunately a web search doesn't clear it up much. Maybe something that targets the joints?

Welcome to HW, glad you found us,

Lynnwood,

Focal proliferative mesangiopathic glomerulonephritis is a form of lupus nephritis.  It is characterized by large amounts of protein passing through the glomeruli (tiny filters) which damages the glomeruli and becomes a vicious cycle.  It doesn't "target" the joints;  however,  chronic kidney disease can cause calcium imbalances and coupled with the fact that the first line treatment is steroids;  it can wreak havoc on the bones.  I know when I first went into kidney failure I was given 1000mg of solumedrol i.v for 5 days followed by 120mg of prednisone by mouth for many weeks.  It was rough!  It took me 13 months to come off the steroids that first time.  If you do a search on mesangiopathic glomerulonephritis and the nephrotic syndrone you'll get a better picture.  My last biopsy showed a progression to global glomerulosclerosis.

Gypsy...i'm baffled by the number of joint replacements you've  had.  Are you having infections that are causing the joints to have to be replaced?  I know the prednisone impairs your ability to heal and suppresses your immune system.  I'm sorry you've had such an ordeal.  God Bless,

                                                                                                      Judy
