At my last Rheumy appointment last week the Dr. told me that he is keeping an eye on the level of protein in my urine. My bloodwork seems to have leveled out for now so that is a good sign. Has anyone else had protein in their urine as well? Should I be concerned?

Hi Connie. In the past I have had protein in my urine. There was about a 7-9 month period before I started on prednisone and I was flaring and I consistently had protein in my urine. Sometimes it was just a trace and sometimes it was quite a bit. I had to do several 24 hour urine tests which came back high, but not so high they were worried about damage, do they just continued to monitor it. Luckily once I started on prednisone, I haven't had protein in my urine.

I do remember being pretty freaked out after I had protein in my urine and was worried about my kidneys and kidney damage, but the great people here helped to ease my mind some. I found out that if you do have kidney involvement that it is fairly treatable, especially if it is caught early. If you haven't done a 24 hour urine test, it would be worth asking about it. Also, if you have continued problems with protein you can also ask for a referral to a nephrologist who would be the one to tell you if the amount of protein you are spilling is anything to worry about.

Keep us updated on what you find out. Take care

Thanks Hippi. My Rheumy is going to keep an eye on it over the next couple of months so hopefully it doesn't turn into anything serious. I will keep getting my blood and urine done every month and hope for the best.

Connie, I hope that it will get better. Even some "normals" can have trace amounts of protein in their urine so I hope your case isn't too much cause for alarm. I will be thinking of you.

Hippi is right though, if they catch it early that is good... its once your creatinine levels go up is when there is a sign of damage. I'm glad your bloodwork came out okay.

Take Care

P.S. I had to correct myself as I originally put "trace amounts of urine in their protein" lol
