G-d help me because this isnt the way I hoped life would be. Is this a flare? expect no freedom from pain till its over? I had multiple scans today everywhere for inflammation, wonder what they will yeild

What are you taking for pain? Aleeve works well. So does Ibuprofen and tylenol. Can your doctor prescribe you something stronger?

Ibuprofen is a placebo right now. Too much pain.

what will they let you take? if the pain is unbearable you can always go to the ER for some morphene or something else.

chaya -- my first rhummy did the same thing. She took a conservative approach with only 5 mg of prednisone and plaqanel. two weeks later, I was in the hospital on my death bed! If you are in an unbearable amount of pain, go to the ER so they can give you something. My lupus progressed for the worse very quickly and if we had not gone to the ER when I did I would have been in really bad shape. (When I went in I was in for 10 days, it took me three months to be able to walk again and a year for my kidneys to get back to normal.) Pain is your body's way of saying something is wrong. I don't mean to scare you, but one thing with lupus -- you have to learn to listen to your body and understand it's needs. Right now, you need pain relief from something -- there may be more there than what meets the eye. Good luck with everything. :-)

Take care,
peachy

Hi Chaya, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. Usually the predisone works pretty fast for inflmation. Likew peachy said if you are in that much pain you should be seen. If you havn't headed for the ER you need to call your doctor and let him know the pain is unbarable and you aren't able to sleep thru it. Doctors are real funny about giving pain meds sometimes but if you have to have it you have to have it.
Good luck

Hello Chaya,

I'm sorry you are having such a rough time.

If your pain is being caused by inflammation, the meds need to be taken on a regular schedule, not just when pain strikes. I have really tried to be conservative with my "as needed" pain meds, but the anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen, aleeve, work best if they are taken on a round-the-clock schedule.

I hope you'll do as the others suggested and call your doc with the information your provided above. I know, for me, night-time is the worst. . . and it can be very lonely and frustrating to lay awake with pain that won't let you sleep.

Let us know what kind of help the doc suggests and how the scans come out.

Blessings!

Hi, Chaya. The prednisone has always been very quickly effective for me. They may not have started your dose high enough. It will take the plaquenil about 6 months to become effective though. I didn't get much relief from the ibuprofen myself. I agree with the others that you should give your rheumy a call and make them aware of what's happening with you. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Chaya,
I am so sorry that you are in so much pain. I am experiencing much the same thing right now, I hurt so much that I cannot think, breathe, sigh, cry...I am just a ball of pain and fever.

I dont really have much to add, only that I am suffering along side you and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Chaya, how are things for you today? I hope the pain relievers helped so that you were at least able to get some sleep. I can't remember if you posted somewhere about how much prednisone you were being started on. Like some of the others here, I got relief pretty quickly from prednisone (within 2 days). It's pretty amazing what prednisone can do at the right dose, it just has some nasty side effects.

I hope today is a better day for you. Take care

Morning chaya,
I was up last night, but our pc is in our bedroom and hubby needed to work early, so it was just me and a boxed set of I Love Lucy last night.

Yesterday my pain was about an 8 on my scale, today its about 6....I literally freaked out a couple of times yesterday because I just could not stop the pain. I have an appointment with my rheumy today at 3, hope she can help.

How are you doing today? Did the pain meds help? Hope you are sleeping and resting.

When I hurt so bad like that, I just wish I could sleep so I didnt have to know what was going on.

Hugs,
Darlene

Hi Chaya,

I hate to hear that you are in so much pain. Like Hippi, I was wondering what dose of prednisone you're on. When I increase my prednisone I usually get relief from my pain within a day. I have found a balance where I take 7.5 mg a day and still have pain but I'd rather deal with some pain and not increase my prednisone. It's a trial and error process. My doc told me the same thing that Rosie described. I take tramadol and when my pain increases I have to take it round the clock for it to be truly effective. Even then I have pain but it's manageable.

I hope you and your rheumy are able to discuss this to your satisfaction. Good luck with your new pain meds and I hope they help you get some sleep!

Love,

Pat
