Greetings!

Just a quick question:

A kindergarten teacher in my building called and she just arrived home from the hospital with a chicken pox diagnosis.  Now, I have had chicken pox as a child but so did she.  Also, I was with her - in the same car and sitting by her - at our conference for all of Thursday and Friday.  She did not feel well the entire trip and blamed it on being on a four day dose of prednisone for "croup" the week before.  She had been off of the prednisone for two full days and I told her her flu-like symptoms sounded like some new type of problem because I didn't think prednisone in such a small dose would do that to her.  Well, it certainly was something else!

Anyway, I wondered if I should be worried about my exposure to her since I take methotrexate and prednisone myself.  Any comments or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Prayers,
Audrey Ann

Hmm,

I don't know anything about the meds. part...but I do know that I had a very mild case of the Pox when I was about 9 yrs. old. I was not sure that I had enough immunities to it so I asked a Doc once (a few years ago) to test my immunity to it as my children had not had the Chicken Pox yet. I am not a huge fan of a gazillion immunizations, so I did not have my girls vaccinated. Anyway, the results came back that I was immune, and supposedly could not catch it again. Having said that, I have a friend who's children caught the chicken pox twice- and that was after they had the vaccination!!! I think, once again, everyone's different- and I hope you don't come down with it! Oh, and also, adults can have the original virus re-emerge as shingles....but that's not too common.

Best wishes

Hi Audrey Ann,

Organicchick nailed it!  Re-exposure to the pox in adulthood can very well cause shingles.  I had them in 2004.  It was one of the worst experiences of my life.  If you notice any kind of blister on your body, get to your doctor ASAP. I can't stress that enough.  You'll need an antiviral to combat it.  It won't cure you, but the shingles will be less severe the quicker you get the antiviral in you.

Look for blisters that occur on only one side of your body.  I'd check more than once a day for the next week or so, just to be sure.

Shingles will attack an immune system that is suppressed.  So if you're on any immune suppressants, or chemo meds, you're at a higher risk. You are on pred and metho, so that puts you in the high risk category.

I REALLY hope you are free and clear.  Fingers crossed!

Hi Audrey Ann,
We have chicken pox going around at our school also.  I just got over having shingles about 2 months ago, but today I seem to be breaking out again.  I am also real sick with a respiratory infection and laryngitis.  So... I went to the doctors and asked her if I could have Shingles again.  She said that usually you only get them once but since my immune system is suppressed she said that it is entirely possible.  So... I have to start treating myself for them again.  I didn't think to bring up the chicken pox aspect to her but I bet it is why I broke out again.  My grandson is in the class that is affected but he hasn't gotten them yet.

I sure hope you don't have them but don't take any chances.  Check with you doctor.

AudreyAnn,

Are you plagued with shingles?  What happened to the blister you found?  Let us know how you're doing okay.  I can give you some tips on what to put on those nasty blisters, IF you have them!

Hope you're well,

Ginny

Greetings Everyone!

I am sorry it has taken me awhile to post. I have been in Traverse City, Michigan at our State Elementary Principal's Conference and now I have a terrible cold, sore throat and laryngitis. Yuck. The blister disappeared about as fast as it appeared and the doctor isn't overly concerned. He said he would be most worried if the blisters or a rash were on my stomach or back or anywhere on my trunk.

So, I quess my yucky feeling was just this cold coming on - thank goodness! I am exhauseted from the trip and the conference. I helped with the planning and did a presentation. I had to keep drinking warm tea all during the presentation so I could speak loud enough for everyone!

Anyway, I am on the lookout for anything unusual and have been told to skip my methotrexate this weekend. My rhuemy does this every so often if I come down with any type of infection. Well, off to bed for me for some good sleep! Blessings to all and thanks for your posts and for your concern!
Prayers,
Audrey Ann
