I use this to clean my fruits & veggies but I know it has many other uses. Anyone use this to treat Lyme? I was just reading about it and I read that, "Grapefruit seed extract has also been used as an anti-microbial treatment for Lyme disease. It appears that grapefruit seed extract can disorganize the organism's cell wall and allow leakage of cellular contents, ultimately resulting in the death of the cell. We humans have no cell wall and thus our cells are not affected." Interesting... Thoughts? I think you put several drops in a glass of water every day.

A woman that I know with lyme swears by this stuff. She has never done antibiotics and never will. She says that this stuff has been her saving grace. She recommends taking 15-30 drops 3x daily BUT.....that you should put it into empty gel caps as it will burn your mouth and throat if you don't. It is very strong. She also said to start out at a low dose and work up. Apparently this stuff is used throughout Europe to treat antibiotic resistant infections. She recommends the Nutribiotic brand. I started it about a week ago and I think it caused a herx from hell. I am not longer on antibiotics.

Yes the nutribiotic grapefruit seed extract is rather potent. I used to do 30 drops per day inserted into empty gelatin capsules. You don't want this stuff on your tongue, very bitter. I think it's main mode of action is a drastic drop of PH in the body, making a hostile environment for many bacteria.

It is also rumored to break borrelia cysts but i'm not sure how valid that theory is. There is also some controversy to the grapefruit seed extract, some parties claim that it is a chemical(anti infective/preservative) used in the grapefruit skin/seeds extraction process which is actually killing pathogens but i have a snakey suspicion these stories were created by the antibiotic manufactures. who really knows.

Wow had no idea.  I've been taking that on and off for years for other reasons, but not at high enough dosages to kill bacteria.  Great find, thanks.

I apologize for the bump of an old thread, but where does one purchase empty gelatin capsules?  Thanks!

I have taken 12 drops of GSE in a glass of water before. It didn't burn my throat. It doesn't taste great - but didn't burn. It's not undrinkable, just not the best tasting stuff ever. I heard that putting it in orange juice will mask the taste. I stay away from juice, though so I don't know that from personal experience.

Take care,
Lexi

HI Chris L, I have seen empty capsules sold in health food stores/vitamin stores, and it's likely they are sold online too. Best wishes. bablymers mom

I was reading on Pubmed this morning...it looks like the GFE is potent because of the preservatives used in the GFE and not the GFE itself. Regardless...it seems to work according to the study.

Anyone know if it matters if GFS is taken on an empty or full stomach and should not be taken near any particular nutraceuticals?

Grapefruit seed extract is not associated with any side effects, drug interactions, or contraindications. However, a number of medications should not be taken with grapefruit juice itself. These include certain immunosuppressants, cholesterol-lowering drugs, and antihistamines - if in doubt consult a physician. Furthermore, when taken as recommended it does not destroy the ‘healthy’ bacteria that reside in the gastro-intestinal tract.
