Hello there Everybody,

I will be switching to Biaxin + Plaquenil shortly, after having been on Biaxin + Flagyl for five months (with an interruption of one month). I went off Biaxin + Flagyl for one month, because, quite frankly, the treatment became worse than the disease.

The postural hypotension occurring several time per days was just one annoying problem. Crushing fatigue, low-grade fevers...I thought babesia was back, then I got the sense that I was suffering from abx overload or neurotoxins or something...<Heavy Sigh> ...OK, I've complained enough! I should include the fact that I have improved about 30% with antibiotic treatment since Jan/08.

I'm looking forward to this change, but I'd like to know about the experiences of other fellow Lymies.
Has anyone out there been on this combo for the treatment of Lyme? If so, what was your experience with this combo? Did you have good results, with decreased symptoms?

Thanks,
spaztick Carrie

Anyone?

I did do a Site Search within this forum re Biaxin + Plaquenil, and read that some folks really liked this combo.

I'm wondering if anyone has recently tried this combo, and for those who have previously tried it, how long did you remain on this combo? My LLMD said we'll try it for ''a few months'' but advised to have an ophthalmic exam every six months, as well as blood testing done every two weeks (LDH, AST, GGT, Serum BUN, creatinine, and CPK -- mostly enzyme testing).

I've been on biaxin and plaq for three weeks and absolutely love the combo.  I have not felt better in years.  The only downside is the stomach issues related to the biaxin, but honestly, it's minor compared to the butt kicking that Lyme gives me.

Hi MountainBiker ~

I'm so glad to hear that you haven't felt better in years -- Congrats!!

The pharmacist did mention possible upset stomach with Plaqeunil, and to take with food if it upsets the stomach.

OOPS! I just noticed that my subject line is wrong, it should read Biaxin + Plaqeunil. Too bad I can't change the subject line.

I hope you continue to get better and better, until you feel like yourself again!

Hey guys, I just started Biaxin 2 days ago and it is killing me. I am on HH and the complete Zhang protocol. Did any of you have severe anxiety when you first started Biaxin or insomnia? Glad you guys are getting better! Great to hear positive news!

Yep, the first week or so on Biaxin is rough.  Take with a full meal, but be careful.  Think of it as a colon cleanse blush .  After a week or so things begin to normalize.  It has a tendency to make stuff soft.

To Spaz:  I have taken biaxin with amoxy in the past.  Now I'm on biaxin with plaq.  The stomach issues between the two routines are exactly the same, which leads me to conclude (maybe falsley) that it's the biaxin doing its thing on the stomach-and not the plaq.  So far so good with plaq, it seems pretty benign so far.

Hi snake ~ I didn't get either severe anxiety or insomnia when I first started Biaxin. I have battled insomnia off and on for many years, and I currently take the Rx Trazodone 300 mg at bedtime for sleep and it has been working very well for me.

Hi MountainBiker ~ I have heard of so many people having stomach problems with Biaxin and other antibiotics. I have been lucky in that regard. I'll be starting Biaxin + Plaq tomorrow, and I'm a bit scared because I have had a history of having bad herxing at the beginning of any abx change. I just hope and pray that the new combo works very well for both of us!

Hi Spaztick:
the medicines (biaxin and flagyl) that you have been on are actually neurotoxins... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3175508/

I am so glad you wrote what you did, as I have been prescribed with those and am a little concerned about the side effects. I was prescribed for the treatment of H Pylori, however, as these are the first-line, conventional antiiotic choices (if one is allergic to amoxcilin, which I am).

I read on the Helico.com forum that others have had depression and insomnia while taking the antibiotics. Before taking them, I am gearing up with probiotics and a lot of alt. therapies, which could help with the side effects of the antibiotics, such as Reservatrol, Green Tea, Licorice Root, honey, Propolis, Protiobitcs (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei, Bacillus Subtilis, Weisella Confusa), pea protein (bioactive peptides), Polysaccharides (Fucoidan, Spirulina, Chlorella, Black Currant, Green Tea, Panax Ginseng). Also, as no alcohol (hence, no Bach Flower Remedies allowed, I have ordered some good chinese herbs, such as Pearl Shen and Super Adaptogen from Dragon Herbs. Ashwandgra is also good. And, Rhodiola.

As a neurotoxin, Biaxin can cause damage to the cochlea, which can affect hearing, balance and cause tinnitus. Taking antioxidants can help prevent this. :)

Hope you feel better on your new combination. :)
