In the two and half years that I have had Lyme I have gained thirty pounds, and I am still gaining. It is now sending me into a state of depression because there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to loose the weight. I try and exercise when I can tolerate it, but I am usually in so much pain and too tired. I am always throwing up and nausea so a lot of the time I can't eat or keep it down. So I guess I just don't understand where this weight is coming from. Is it Lyme related? Is there ANYTHING I can do? If it is Lyme related will I go back to my normal weight when I get better. I hate looking in the mirror and I hate even more that Lyme has taken so much away from. I also hate watching my friends and family eat what they want without exercising and they all look great. I am just so mad. I know I shouldn't care about what people think, but my friends don't understand the disease and probably just look at me as the girl who gained too much weight. I am just desperate to loose it. Please someone share their wisdom because I feel really bad.

ShelM,

I've gain 15 pounds since I started treatment (few months ago). I'm sensitive to drugs (side-effects) and I would guess that my weight gain is due to all the meds I've been on in the last 7-8 months (and the reduced amount of physical activity). Fortunately, I wanted to gain a little weight so it doesn't bother me too much (but then again I'm a guy) but I'm hoping I don't gain too much more. I'm planning to start excersizing soon (assuming I continue to improve) so I can tone up a bit. I certainly understand your concerns and frustrations. It will get better. Hang in there.

I totally feel for you. I am in the same situation. I cannot lose weight. I am not able to exercise much and I do eat more out of depression. Infact, I tried to start a new years detox to lose some weight and ended up in the emergency room on monday with dehydration. My sister told me I need to change my thinking as to what exercise is and do what I can do. She is right. So, hang in there. You are not a lone in this.

It was explained to like this -- the simple version.

We take antibiotics and kill the bacteria. The dead bacteria are toxic so our livers are working very hard to get rid of these toxins. Since it is also your liver that would help remove fat from your body the liver makes a choice and takes care of the toxins first -- and your body hangs on to the fat.
Processed foods additives, colors, etc. also makes your liver work overtime so this is also one reason why a very healthy diet is very important.

It IS Lyme related, I gained 45 lbs!! Dieting on Lyme does not work well and is not good for your health. You need an assortment of nutrients and foods.

It's a combination of things. lack of exercise/activity, slower digestive/bowel and adrenal function from Lyme, using food for comfort or quick energy.

I feel your pain quite literally. Treating your lyme is more important then your weight right now. I know its not something that is easy to accept.

The other thing is yeast - Candida - there are many websites that explain it. The antibiotics only add to this problem.....

I also gained 35 lbs within 6 months of beginning treatment  couldn't believe how quickly it came on. That was about 2 years ago. After 4 months on the pic line I gradually began to lose it - all of it. I was told the lyme and co-infections cause a metabolic syndrome where the metabolism is slowed and compromised. I was also depressed from it but you will see as you improve you will lose the weight and you will also be able to be more active. In addition many of my allergic sensativities went away. There was a point where I couldn't drink filtered water without my mouth burning for hours after. I still have a long way to go as far as healing goes but I am definately 70% better than I was last year at this time. Blessings
